p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Is the Canon S9x / S1xx still the best pocketable P&S?

My dad asked me the other day to look for a portable camera for him. He currently has an older, integral panasonic camera, but the fact that he has to carry a bag to use it means that in fact it rarely gets used. He thinks (and I agree) that he'd use a camera he could bring in a jacket pocket. So my question, really, is what's the best option. Fuji X20 is a good example of what I'm not looking for -- wonderful, but too big. I bought an S90 some years ago for my wife to bring on a trip abroad, and it was pretty decent for outdoor/daylight shooting. I'm looking for a good option at that size, preferably used. S100? Anything else out there? Thanks for any help for a guy who just hasn't really looked at the P&S market for 4-5 yrs.

Yup, Sony RX100 looks like a winner for that category.

Sony RX100 is simply amazing. Best $600 I have ever spent.

Rx100 ftw! I recommended it to my parents as well. They ended up going the dslr route (Nikon 5200) but yeah for a p&s it's pretty awesome.

The biggest negative against the RX100 is that its optical stabilization is not very effective, good for less than a stop in my testing. This is bad news for a P&S camera that must be held out in front of you to shoot (no optical viewfinder). I'm hoping Sony improves on this in the next generation.
