For bulk orders I do MpixPro, but for smaller stuff, I love to print my own stuff. I have fallen in love with Harmon Gloss Art Fibre paper. So good.

Anyway, my question is what printers do you guys use and how are they on ink? I have a Canon 9500 MK2. Quality is pretty great, but it drinks ink, I swear. I must spend 30/week on ink. Everytime I print something another cartridge runs out.

I thought this was going to be about optical printing.

7880. It is good on ink, but it won't do a lot of things, like print 4*6's. I usually sell wedding albums at 13*19 that are a bit pricey, but it was the only way I could control the whole wedding, from shot to large format print.

Epson 3880 is very efficient in therms of ink and has amazing quality of borderless printing. The Original cartriges are also cheap and last very long.
Maybe it's cheaper to go to this one than to keep your 9500 if it's that expensive on ink? I tried refillable cartriges, but the quality isn't there or the pricedifference is not worth it.

Very pleased with my 3880. I do all my own printing to 22 inches.

I have an HP Z3200. I liked it more when I had a dedicated studio. Now I work from home and it doesn't see nearly as much use and takes up a lot of room. :\

Epson 4900 - excellent print quality and pretty decent on ink too.

Is there really a business case for owning one? I'm surprised the paper + ink + time stacks up. Part of me also feel uncomfortable selling inkjet prints at high cost since my B9180 (pigment ink) had series fade issues.

Canon IPF6100 great machine really thrifty on ink no fade issues. Also have a 13" HP that I use for invitations which has the fade problem (vivera inks). I don't like printing anything smaller than 8 x 10 I find it's not worth it. I do like printing the 20 x 30 and 24 x 36.

That's old stuff you're talking there. That's like saying digital isn't as good as film. Things have moved along with in-house printing in terms of paper + ink + time and even fading. To me these have been non factors for many years. Visit the Post-processing & Printing forum and you will read a lot regarding these non-factors.

Of course this also depends on what you're printing and who you're delivering to.

It's not really a business decision. I have one because I love photos, and I love printing my own photos. Like I said, big orders go to MPP.

I have a Canon Pro 9000 MkII. Love it. I really like Ilford's Galerie Smooth Pearl paper. I don't print in large quantities. Just the occasional client print and personal prints for the home. Most of my personal work is shot with B&W film so the majority of my prints are B&W.

I have a Canon Pro 9000 MkII , too. I also love it. You can't complain about cost of ink if you got the printer for $150 bucks, or less.
Although, I find it is not that bad so maybe the 9500 is not as good.
I find most couples want DVD's and just a few, one or two, prints. A nice 8x10 or 11x14 and that is it.

Canon 9500v2 for 11x14 prints and smaller. Canon ipf8300 (44") for anything larger, whether printed or on canvas. I do all my own canvas printing and stretching as well, saves loads of money in the long run.
