Petkal, I don't know if I have ever shot photos as sharp as yours.

Thank you Steve, Darren, Rob and Sallie Jo.

Rob, that is an optical trick......the images just appear sharp because I lean on USM a lot.

Here's a few more, some flights, some perched.

Again, handheld 1DX + 600 II + 1.4xTC III.

Lovely work as usual Peter. I just checked to see how many pick-aim-shoot cycles I could do with a 5D MIII & a 500/4 V1; 4 & 1/2

Guess I am a wimp :P

Thank you Shreeni.

No, I do not think you are a wimp.....gotta have a little pause between each lift-aim-fire.
However, at least you are being candid about it without that all too common internet macho bravado......because handling those big lenses is not easy even for young and strong men.

Peter,
Pic # three is about as good as I've ever seen. The detail is where it matters and the shallow depth of field creates a sense of motion as the wings soften in the fore and background.

Absolutely stunning... definitely worth the fatigue!

Some mighty fine shots indeed in this lot. Be nice to live on lake and hone your skills daily.

Thank you, Bruce, glad to hear you like that stuff.

Lastly, let me conclude by saying that 1.4XTC MkIII doesn't take away any good performance of 600 II. That goes for IQ as well as AF responsiveness. I can not generalize these issues because the TCs are kind of tricky, but the 600 II + 1.4xTC MkIII combo is very very good on 1DX, 1DsMkII and 1DMkIIN. The combo is just nicely sharp and not easy to tell from a bare lens. I did try using the combo on 7D, but the camera couldn't AF well at all, so I dropped that line of testing.

IMO, therein resides the 2nd major strength/benefit of the MkII supertelephoto lenses, including 600 II: excellent (unprecedented) performance with MkIII TCs. (The primary benefit is the weight reduction, in my view.)

That is it.....being retired, I have been able to spend almost every day shooting this or that.....after all those years and thousands upon thousands of shots, even a monkey could learn how to shoot them pijuns.

Peter I used my 1D X with the 300 f/2.8L IS mk I and 2x TC III a few weekends ago and I was very surprised at how snappy the AF was, much better than on my 7D and results were very good IQ wise. I have just received my 500 mk II and hope to try the lens and TC's this weekend. If you wanted a fairly light weight high quality setup, a 1D X + 300 f/2.8 mk II + 2x TC III would be damn good. Even with my mk I the IQ wide open was excellent.

Absolutely: 1DX + 300 f/2.8 IS MkI + 2xTC MkIII was so good that I suspect I probably wasted money on upgrading to 300 f/2.8 IS MkII. Hell, I know I've wasted that money.

However, you will enjoy 1DX + 500 II (+ TCs). That setup is so sweet (performance + low weight) that I just do not understand why so many people seem to favour the 600 II.

Peter, you gotta know that you're making it hard on yourself to top these. I share your pain even with the 500. Just can't wait to get to your age.

Thank you Aditya.

Thank you, Gary, I think you also need to retire ASAP.....a few good years we've got left is the most valuable commodity of all things.
