Here is my operating experience feedback: the subject combo works pretty good on Wood Pijuns In Flight (WPIF). Gettin' a few lucky shots works even better.

However, after about 2 hours of swinging that setup to and fro on WPIF, fatigue started to set in.
I suppose if I had to shoot something more erratic, smaller and with more frequent lift-aim-fire cycles, such as Common terns fishing, I would have probably lasted one hour......barely.

Thank goodness for lenses such as 500 II, 300 f/2.8, 400 f/5.6 and 400 DO which are significantly more suitable for fast BIF photography.

That first shot is one of your best (and you have shown many excellent photos).

Thanx Larry, I am as ready for R/C as I'll ever be.
The Tern in flight season is also about to begin now, and that keeps me busy too.

Purty nice shootin thar partner

Another nice set of your woodies, for moi it's #4, don't think I've ever seen a duck look much like a hummingbird just before it dines on a bit of nectar! I realize ducks don't usually dart about getting their nourishment from flowers n such, but that is quite the interesting pose; capture...very cool!

Very impressive. I just ordered the 400 DO and 300/2.8 II IS to try.
What kind of delta in quality should I expect in A3 size prints for the naked DO and 300 +1.4 TC? How often can lemons be found among these teles?

Thanx Jim, Jamie, Jerry and Lan11.

A cumbersome/heavy/long setup such as 600 II + 1.4xTC (or 800L) works much better on larger and slower birds in flight such as eagles, cormorants, cranes, Great blue herons, egrets, geese and such. However, I believe it would be always better to get closer to the target, where possible, and use a lighter/shorter lens. Again, that is unfortunately not always possible.

I am not versed in print sizes and quality one can expect because I do not print anything any more.

However, 300 f/2.8 IS MkII (and 400 f/2.8 IS II) is the sharpest lens of the whole lot.
400 DO has the weakest IQ of all long lenses.
No comparison there.

Even my ex 300 f/2.8 IS MkI + 2xTC MkIII had a markedly better IQ than my 400 DO bare.

Thanks.
Hopefully the difference in prints will not be highly obvious. I like the DO's size & weight.

When it comes to shy small birds (perched), then 600 II + 1.4xTC (or 800L) starts to really "sing".

When I took a little break from shooting WPIF, I sighted several Waxwings in a fairly distant bush. No problem, very easy shooting with handheld 600 II + 1.4xTC.

Peter, Fatigue or not, this focal length gives a different 'look' to the subjects. As always I'm impressed by the IQ presented on your images.

Thanx Fred. I believe that 700mm to 840mm FL should be plenty long for any type of handheld photography. Beyond that one may have to use a pod, because of IQ as well. Those very long range shots seldom look very good to me, particularly when scrutinized at 100 %.

Sorry did I read that right; you are now admitting it's not always possible to get closer and it's not just lack of skill.

IMO a good direction is to attempt to get closer while dropping FL of a lens. When successful, that results in a low weight and a low cost lens, and often yields better IQ.

Lately I have been experimenting with both strategies: get close and use a very long lens . That will not last long though.

BTW, Pixie, I find your new avatar kinda distracting a bit.
