Lars and Timmy, reasonable questions.

I believe him because he said it's from Canon. And I know the owner very well, having spent a considerable sum of money at his shop before. He would not lie to me. I also asked if he got it from a message board. He said no, he got it from Canon.

Keith,

Would you mind telling me which store you go to? I have a project in Sydney so I may have a chance to drop by for a look. Feel free to PM me if you prefer.

Thanks!

I don't understand what would be so exciting about this new camera (putting aside the new lenses), unless the sensor performs like the 1DmkII sensor. Is Digic II that huge an improvement? Faster turn-on and faster writing to the card would be a nice improvement too, but nothing that radical.

Sure it would be an improvement, but I wouldn't run out to get one unless the sensor is as noise-free as the 1DmkII.

Digic II is what they use on the MKII so you should expect to see the same levels of noise, colour accuracy and white balance as the MKII. Or at least, very close to it (since in this case they packed 8 MP onto a 1.6 sensor rather than a 1.3 sensor)

What about Ettl-2. That's what I'm interested in.

Forget the EF-S mount -- especially if the Lens has a rotating focussing method -- this will render it useless if you want to use a polariser with it (or at least VERY difficult as you'll have to focus first, lock the focus, and then adjust the polariser.

Digic II is probably a factor in the Mk II's noise, but so is the physical characteristics afforded by the lower pixel density. I suspect that this camera's new electronics will essentially equal the detrimental effect of the tighter pixel density, resulting in about the same noise performance of the present 10D. That's not a terrible thing.

I guess I'll be keeping the 10D for a while yet, until a good 1.3X falls into my price range.

Well, the rotating focusing method isn't due to the mount - its a characteristic of Canon's lowest-priced line of lenses. I hope that the new 17-85 falls into the same quality as the 28-135 USM, with true ring-type USM, distance scale, and similar operating feel.

Don't ya just love idle speculation...this just occurred;

On August 12, 2004 at Lake Success, N.Y. after Canon received the 2004 INSIGHT AWARD FOR MOST INNOVATIVE CMOS IMAGE SENSOR TECHNOLOGY, Yukiaki Hashimoto, senior vice president, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A. was asked if there is a new 10D approaching now that the 1D MKII is out...he replied in part "At this time we have no plans to make any significant changes in the current 10D digital camera. We are pleased that it holds a large market share in high end consumer digital cameras."

And he's right. Creating a new 20D doesn't constitute "making significant changes to the current 10D". Technically, its a different camera.

That doesn't mean that they won't discontinue the 10D when the new body is announced.

For all those that asked if I know anything else, about E-TTL2 or price, the answer is that I do not know any more details. I do not work for Canon, nor am I affiliated with them, as you can see in my sig that I own a D70 and Nikon stuff. I used to have a DRebel though.

My personall GUESS would be that once the 20D is released, the 10D price will drop to the D70 body price point to compete directly, and the 20D would be somewhat more. I'm guessing along the lines of somewhere between $1299-1499 for the body. No idea what lenses will be...

I think a lot of poeple are confusing the new 20D with the new 3D or whatever the new midrange DSLR will be called. The specs I've read on a board talk about a 8mp, 1.6X, 5fps, 25 shot (burst), new design. One guy on another board pointed out that these were not the specs of the 10D replacement but those of a "new" Canon DSLR. A slightly modified 10D renamed 20D would certainly not qualify as a "new" camera. That would also go along the lines of what the Canon guy was saying that there were no significant changes planned for the 10D line at this time.

As always, we'll see but I am a bit impatient to know what's around the bend.

I'm not too impatient, but it will be quite interesting to see what comes about. Certainly, a 20D, if Canon follows its own conventions, would place below the 10D on the product heirarchy. That would make it a good replacement for the Rebel rather than the 10D. But, given that it will possess a modest improvement over today's 10D, I don't see how the two models could co-exist at the same time in that manner.

My vote is a discontinuation of the 10D, a lower price on the Rebel (maybe even a couple of modest changes), the 20D priced as the deluxe consumer level, and a new 3D mid-pro with 1.3X sensor.

The Rebel's price will be very favorable - maybe $700 with the kit lens.
20D at 1300 with better (17-85 IS) kit lens
3D at 2000-2500 without lens (I want one)

Don't know what to make of the 1Ds - there are rumors there as well.

PS - this is pure speculation (and some wishful thinking) on my part. I essentially don't have a clue.

Can anyone confirm anything about 1DS successor rumors?

To be announced at Photokina?
To be called 1DS Mark II?
MP count or other features/changes?
To be available in Q1 of 2005?
Price point?

It wouldn't make sense to make four sensors, the 1.6x, 1.5x, 1.3x and a full-frame.

I doubt that will happen.

I doubt a new camera would be a 3D because the natural successor to the 1D and 1Ds series in the future would be the 2D and 3D and so on...

Canon's numbering is very weird, so it's anyone's guess but the most likely scenario is a 20D. We'll all find out sooner or later...

Canon is announcing some new cameras on the 19th of August. This is one of them, the new G6. The 20D is confirmed by several sources and the specs as outlines in the first post are correct. The price is either $1599 or $1699 with the new 17-85mm lens. No word on a 3D or equivalent camera, but it could be announced at Photokina.

10D MKII = 9MP 1.5X do make some sense.

Why?

9MP at 1.5X requires the same size pixel as 8MP 1.6X. Canon can do this sensor like a cookie cutter, easy.

1.5X also makes some sense. Canon will have a 1MP advantage over Nikon's D70. It also won't eat into 1D-MK2's customer base. 8MP/1.3X is still better than 9MP/1.5X.

Economically speaking, 4 sensors would be ridiculously expensive to produce. I don't think they'd even consider it unless the new 300D is going to be a 1.5x and they're going to stop producing the 1.6x.
