Pretty sure I have the correct ID on the Merlin. I believe the victim was a Eurasian-collared Dove.

I should mention that the Dove was too heavy for the Merlin to fly off with it. It could fly maybe 20-40 feet with it, but would then have to land and see what I would do next.

Since this thread has been renewed, I will add to the story.

Two Merlins nested somewhere in nearby fir trees. This day 3 doves strayed into the area. The Merlin flushed the 3 out of a fir tree. 2 flew away to safety, but this one went in the opposite direction and flew down into a bush right in front of a house for safety. The Merlin went right into the bush and must have killed the dove there on the ground.

The first image is a great post smackdown pic. Looks like the bird is trying to determine what to do next - eat in or take out. Good brightness in the second. Nicely captured.

Tony, Great find,
I didn't think a Merlin would attempt to take down something that big, nice

Dear Tony: Can you tell me the place and date on which you photographed this Merlin with a Eurasian Collared-Dove, and if you actually witnessed the capture? We had a similar incident here in northern New Mexico in November 2010, but I quickly caught and rescued the dropped dove before it had been harmed by the falcon and eventually released the bird back into the wild. Also, I believe that your Merlin is an adult female of the so-called "black" subspecies, of which Vancouver Island is at the epicenter of its resident and breeding range! Otherwise, the photos are both great, and thanks for posting them on line, John in The Land of Enchantment

Beautiful photos, Tony. It appears to be a Merlin of the very dark race, suckleyi, of the Pacific Northwest.

Yikes, that bird is as big as the Merlin. That's like me trying to take home a shopping cart full of Chinese food.

I like the first shot for the Merlin's pose.

Thanks, Ken. The Merlin knew he could not fly too far with his kill because of the weight. It had to decide on whether or not I was going to steal it.

Thanks, Tim. Surprised me too that it could catch the dove.

Hi John,

It was taken around April 20, 2013 at Parksville, BC, Canada. I saw them both fly into the bush, but did not see the actual kill. The dove was dead when the merlin brought it out in the open and tried to fly away with it.
