p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Big Sur wildflowers

This is one of my favorite times of the year in Big Sur. Here are some recent shots of the blooms along the coast. Note that the more distant shot is private land.

Very beautiful and colorful set. I am very partial to the last shot. The diagonal line of flowers and the distant cliffs and island make the best of the bunch.

Love them! How did you process the first one with the sunset? Was a split ND used? It does not have that overexposed look nor does it lack contrast.

Thanks guys.

Todd, the first one was the biggest challenge to process as you might imagine since the DR was extreme shooting directly into the sun. Also this was *one* exposure handheld since I forgot my tripod on this trip! I was really kickin' myself wanting to shot more long exposures, especially at night.

No ND filter was used. Instead I processing two exposures from the single RAW file - one for the sky and the other for the land. I worked both separately in PS using levels primarily with some shadow/highlights then blended together. The hardest part was bringing out the light streaming across the hills without losing contrast as you noticed. I find manually blending the best for this as HDR washes and flattens things out too much.

They're all beautiful, and the first one is amazing, almost 3D.

Here one more I just processed shot mid-morning as the poppies are just starting to open - same spot as #4 above:
