Sorry guys, not been around to read the posts. Thank you all so much for the replies. I didn't change clothes because it was just a dry run and I was too lazy to take it further.
The easiest way that I know of making the shot is by multiple exposures. I set the cards and chips on the table and took a seat whilst holding a shutter release cable. The settings have to be manual after first setting the focus and using a mid aperture about f8 or so. Although, the exif data on one image states f7.1, 1/10sec, iso 800, 22mm on my 17-85 lens, and I expect them all to be the same. The time delay was two seconds so I could get the pose I wanted after dropping the shutter release cable. I then took the others pictures.
I didn't do anything in camera raw, just opened them straight into Photoshop. As each image is the same physical size, I just dragged one image at a time over the first, added a vector mask and then used a brush with black paint set to normal blend at 100% and painted away the top layer where the underlying character is. Any problems, just change the colour to white and paint back what you have taken away with black. Keep repeating with each image and when complete, make the adjustments you would normally make to an image.
if you adjust each image individually, the final image will look wrong. It's much better to do levels and whatever at the end.
I hope this helps those that want to do something similar.
