I'm looking for recommendations for a lens in the 24-70 range besides the Nikkor.

The $1,500 + is just a tad higher than I want to go presently, and sometimes people's experiences are worth more than so guy paid to do a review or a slant towards whatever..

I have a Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 and it's extremely sharp, however when I compare it to my Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 it vignettes quite a bit, exhibits more distortion, is slower to focus and has a touch of unnatural color cast. Don't get me wrong, overall it's very good, it's just not Nikon 24-70mm good by any stretch of the imagination.

The first comparison I did is here: http://blog.kendalltristan.com/archives/262 and though it only shows results for one focal length, I do find that the rest of the focal range exhibits similar differences between them.

How about the older Nikkor 28-70/2.8? Can be gotten for about a grand.

The new Tamron 24-70/2.8 VC is the lens you look for.

Thanks for the input. After looking/reading this all over, I just bit the bullet and went with the new Nikkor. Thanks for the suggestions.

I can tell what I would not recommend. The Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM was all the rage a couple years ago on the review boards when it first came out. So based upon what I was reading I thought I would give it a shot. I wanted to add a 24-70 f2.8 to my assistants kit but I didn't want to spend the cash on the Nikon version. I figured I could save 1/2 the cost of the Nikon version, I mean, could it be half as good? So I bought a copy and started testing it. It was really bad! From f4-f2.8 the edges/corners were totally unsharp. Probably 30-40% of the frame area of the lens at these f-stops was useless. So I figured I just got a bad copy. Sigma for years has a had a reputation of poor quality control. So I sent it back and got a 2nd one. It was even worse than the first. Sent it back too and broke down and got another Nikon. Not only is it much sharper with way less vignetting it also focuses way faster than the Sigma version.

the nikkor 24-70 is awesome, but its also a yawn. So boring. If you want that zoom range then invest in the nikon. It is worth it.

I am recommending the Tamron 28-75 2.8 next to the Nikkor! I am using both: the 24-70 for serious stuff, and the 28-75 when I want to travel light and carry a quality lens. What you lose is AF speed and the 4mm on the wide side, IQ is not really different IRL.

Good for you, it's worth every penny. It will last you many years and still have a good resale value.

I have the old non-BIM Tammy 28-75, and I love it. It is ~$325 used and easily 85%-90% as good as the Nikons that cost 3X-5X that much.

Why only 85%? It is because the Tamron is only 28mm or because it's only worth $325 used? Or because it's not weather sealed or Nano Crystal coated or no AFS? You get what you pay for.
