p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Huge Sectional HS baseball game

These teams have battled for the section title for each of the past three seasons. Mars (PA) and Hampton are about 15 minutes apart and fight for the titles in just about every sport it seems. This game featured two of the top pitchers in the area. Mars starter Dave Bednar (in dark blue) is a scholarship player headed to Lafayette to pitch next year. Joe Vita for Hampton (#44 in royal blue) will also pitch in college next spring. Game tied 1-1 into the 9th inning (regulation is 7 in high school) with both pitchers still on the mound. Hampton roughed up Bednar for 7 runs in the 9th and won 8-2.

Miserable shooting angles. Dugouts block traditional spots. 12 foot black chain link fence all the way around the field. Not allowed on field or dugouts to shoot. Tried to get creative from behind home plate, down the lines, and even into the outfield. C&C always welcome.

Nikon D3s with 300 2.8 (naked, 1.4 TC and some 2.0 TC from outfield for variety)

#1 is soft Rick...think in #4 would like to see his face more, and, more the classic follow through after a shot.

#5 doesn't work, need at least the guy to the left's face and more ball...

#9 crop in tighter, esp that blob on the left hand side of the frame.

#11 the trash can looks to be the sharpest item...and, the trash can

#13, too tight for me...

Some keepers here, Rick, but gonna keep it real- like Chris mentioned, there are some that are kind of soft, or show backs, etc, and would warrant culling them out so they don't drag down the others. Hope that's not too harsh, buddy...

Hey Rick, 'sounds' like a fun ballgame to shoot. Looks to me like very strong backlighting is doing a real number on the resolution of several of these images. But I'm wondering if you couldn't add a bit more pop to a few of these with levels adjustments to bring up the black point. Many are too washed out to do it for me.

Rick I agree with Chris, Tom and Russ on their comments. On the levels adjustment....I took one of your shots and did a little tweak for a before/after look.

Also...I'm wondering if the TC might be impacting the total sharpness on your shots

Morning Tom,

As I look through the post a second time, I see exactly what you are talking about. Some real so-so shots are included here that should have been dumped. I did receive the PSD file that you emailed to me with the tonal adjustments and tweaked levels. It makes a huge difference. Thanks for taking the time to do that to show me the difference.

Russ,

You hit it right on the head. Afternoon sun directly to the pitcher's back. Brutal back-lighting situation that I frankly didn't handle very well. I have been racking my brain to figure out why the images are not as sharp -- and then it hit me. The entire set was shot through the fence. I've shot at so many fields in the past month that it never crossed my mind -- but I know that is why these all look so muddy and need so much attention in post.

What I am going to do is pick a half dozen of these, tweak the black levels and make some tonal adjustments and re-post later this afternoon. Thanks for your keen eye Russ.

Frank, Thank you for taking the time to grab one of the shots and show us all how much a difference post-production work can make in a shot. I sure appreciate it. As someone who learns visually, it immediately showed me what you were talking about.

Can't say how much I appreciate guys like you, Chris, Tom and Russ taking the time to look -- and to be candid about what you see without pulling any punches. That's why I visit the Sports Corner each and every day. It also shows why all of us need to keep posting even.

Rick

Fence can definitely give everything an overall haze. One thing you'll notice is completely emptiness on the far left of the histogram after you have taken the shot. If you pinch the slider to where the color information starts in the histo, everything snaps in nicely. It can be overcome. Some instances are more difficult that others. White/silver fence vs. black fence, where the highlights or shadows hit the links, etc.

Processing aside everything else is good. Comp, action etc. That's the hard part anyway.
