p.3 #1 · Canon 800mm review on Amazon

My favorite is for the Sigma 200-500 f/2.8 aka the bazooka

Here's a gem:

Well, I finally decided to spring for the Sigma 200-500 f/2.8. For under $30,000 I couldn't pass up the deal. I know, carrying a 37lb lens around may seem like a chore, but the savings in gas to drive to photo shoots more than compensates for it. I actually do most of my Florida and Georgia area outdoor wedding and landscape shoots from my rooftop now. The IQ is tack-sharp even wide open at 1000mm (w/ 2x converter, obviously) The issue I had, was when the FBI and Homeland security showed up at my house. I was shooting a wedding in downtown Orlando, which is only about 30 miles away, from my roof. The house was surrounded and guns drawn on me. You see, I live near enough to a major airport that the neighbors mistook it's green color and imposing size as some sort of ground to air missile launcher. I would strongly consider coloring it a light color to minimize thermal expansion during the day, and marking the side "Not A Stinger Missile". Also, it is a nice walk around lens for family trips to the zoo. Low light performance is superb. Most photos can be taken without flash, on a moonless night, following a massive power outage, by simply lighting a fart during the exposure. Experiment with differing brands of beans, as it affects the color temperature of the raw shot.

Yes, 800L has become quite out of date, not to say obsolete.

Here's the proof:
(1) The front element doesn't have fluorine coating.
(2) IS has only two modes, i.e., the critically important mode 3 is absent.
(3) The lens barrel is finished in old fashioned yellowish bone colour.
(4) All experts have dropped 800L in favour of 600 f/4 IS MkII.
(5) Nowadays, new 600 II purchases vastly outnumber new 800L purchases.

Which has better resolution and contrast, The 800 or the new 600 II with the new 1.4 III extender?

Peter, it is very unbecoming of someone who fashions himself to be the "SuperTeleMaster" to defer to other "specialists"

Mitesh, my "mastery" covers individual long lenses per se (or "per say", in your American usage. ). Id est, I do not do comparative long lens reviews......not pro foro externo, as you Americans say.

I think in the real world, it really does not matter. Bigger factors in your images will be quality of your light, composition, subject, etc. To be able to use/have either lens is simply wonderful.
If you want to look at test charts, the 600mm II + 1.4x or +2.0x seems better than the bare 800mm based on this comparison, but it also means you spend approximately an extra $3,000 for it.

Where do you pay $ 3000 extra for the 600 II ? None of the normal shops. Like B&H or Adorama.
It's also rather obvious that a 600 II + 2x is NOT better than a bare 800 in IQ.

Apparently Amazon is full of these, just like the news is full of stories about stalkers.

In fact, I'm going to head over to Amazon right now and report that review to get it removed.

Sorry mate but only a really, really childish and immature person would find that JOKE sick or inappropriate. Mate You really need to get some distance. If You can't tell the difference between joke and sad reality than it's You who needs help, not that guy that made this funny/joke "review".

Best regards

Yes, thread can certainly diverge from the OP. Anyway,
In usa used 800mm is going for $9,000 range. New 600II ~$12,300 - 12,800 (BH/Adorama). Just a ballpark figure, but if I bought an 800mm, I don't think I'd buy it new at retail price which would narrow the price gap. I think you referenced both brand new, sorry if I confused anyone on this.
i'm curious to see your references about iq given your strong statement. I wouldn't accept it as an axiom, but since they are both fine lenses it doesn't really matter in the end. I've only seen one comparison online which is what I referenced as my sole source. I must have missed some others when I searched the web for comparisons. pls post yours or give link! thnks

I would have to agree with Lasse Erikson, I think a bare 800 is going to have not only better resolution and contrast but also faster AF than a 600 II with an extender attached.

That may well be, but is just a pity that according to the experts the 800L + 1.4xTC combo is not very good.
