p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Your lens lineup?

As it happens I currently own more lenses than I've ever done before. Mostly due to upgrading / changing around some lenses while not having gotten around to start selling off lenses being replaced. It's probably a pretty small collection compared to some of you here, but for me it's huge. I usually aim for maybe 4-5 lenses for my main system & perhaps 6-7 total.

Anyways, I was taking inventory & decided to take a photo of all of them together & figured it might be worth sharing. Initially I planed to post it to the NEX lineup thread, but since it's been archived, here it is:

From back to front, left to right:
Canon 135L
Nikon Series-E 50/1.8
Sony SEL18-55
Zeiss ZM 28/2.8
Hasselblad Zeiss 80/2.8 C
Leica Elmar-C 90/4
Sigma 30/2.8 E-mount
Leica Summicron 28/2
Leica Summircon 50/2
Voigtländer 15/4.5
Leica Summicron-C 40/2
Voigtländer 40/1.4

I mainly use the NEX-7, but also have a NEX-5N, Leica CL & Hasselblad 500C. I came from a Canon 5D II explaining the 135L, which is to be sold.

Here are the M-mount lenses, which is what I use on the NEX cameras 90% of the time:

Again from left to right:
Leica Elmar-C 90/4 (with E-mount adapter)
Leica Summicron 50/2
Leica Summicron 28/2
Zeiss ZM 28/2.8
Voigtländer 40/1.4
Leica Summicron-C 40/2
Voigtländer 15/4.5

Might write up some short impressions of the lenses if there's interest.

Anyway, would be great to hear / see your lineups.

while buying and selling lenses over the years I've come to realise that in strict economic terms used lenses are like currency or precious metals: it's the only photographic equipment that can almost as easily go up in value as it can go down. In that sense it's more like an investment rather than expense and if bought carefully they are, essentially, free, the only limitation being how much money you are comfortable having tied down in a non-dividend-paying investment. Much like gold, if that makes u feel any better

Anyway you have a nice collection, enjoy. Personally after a huge expansion of my kit, these days I prefer to limit myself to 3-4 lenses with very specific applications because I found that too much variety confuses me photographically and the quality of my output goes down.

I'm in a similar position to Spyro. I have many lenses to chose from, and so I select a few based on what I expect to do. Although, in some cases when I'm taking my car on a photo trip, I bring a lot of stuff with me - you never know...

Thanks! Good points. I really do enjoy it

I agree that fewer lenses are better for the creativity. I've taken some of my best photos when limited to just one lens. As mentioned, my ideal kit would probably look like yours – 3-4 lenses with specific uses.

The problem is that finding those 3-4 purposes / lenses takes quite a bit of trial and error. I wish I'd figured this out sooner, but what kind of gear that fits you as a person is very different from what can be figured out by reading reviews.

My current strategy is to buy interesting lenses when good deals appear (mainly used) and sell whatever I don't like. This way I don't lose much money and I also learn a lot about what I like. The only problem is that Sweden is a fairly small market and sometimes it takes a bit long to find what you're interested in buying or to sell what you have resulting in a bloated lineup (no way am I going to keep both 28:s and both 40:s), but I still find it a far better approach than going only on other peoples preferences.

Looks great. I'm surprised that you don't use the M-lenses on the NEX as well. Seems like they would balance better than the Pentax glass, no?

Nice line-up: seems like you have a couple of duplications in focal length. Any thoughts comparing the 28 cron an/ZM 28, or the CV 40/cron 40?

I bought the NEX as a family camera. One I could give to my parents when they go on holiday, or to use with dinner.
For that I really wanted it to be a AF camera, so use the sigma's 19 and 30 with it.

For my normal photography I have the M9P. About 95% or more I use the leica.

The pentax lenses I already had before buying the NEX, So its more for fun I use them on the NEX.
I did buy a M-NEX adapter to use the leica's. But untill now (have the nex for about 6 months now) I only used that once.
Sure it works great, but I prefer the M9 for the leica's and like to keep the NEX simple with AF lenses.

Thanks. Sure.

I got both Summicrons just recently. The Biogon & Nokton on the other hand are my two most used lenses over the last year. Needless to say, I'm far more familiar with the Zeiss & the Voigtländer than the Leicas, but my initial impressions goes like this:

Zeiss ZM 28/2.8 Biogon – One of the best lenses I've used. Fantastic colour – smooth & warm. Razor sharp. Slightly messy bokeh. Very little distortion, curvature of field and vignetting. Very slight colorshift on the NEX-7, none on the 5N. Focuses down to .5m. The sharpness can become overbearing, almost aggressive, especially when shooting people. Ok ergonomics, but I prefer a focus tab over the little nub on the ZM. Build quality seems slightly less good than the Leicas & even the Voigtländers, but it might just need a CLA.

Leica Summicron-M 28/2 ASPH – Had never planned on getting this due to it's astronomical price, but couldn't resist when a slightly beaten up copy turned up at an 'affordable' price. Totally worth it! Quite possibly the best lens I've used. Amazing colour – natural, smooth & strong – a matter of preference as to which is better between this and the Biogon. Nicer rendering of sharpness – insanely high micro contrast, even wide open, but not the in-your-face sharpness of the Zeiss. Call it smooth but sharp. Great bokeh. The f/2 maximum aperture makes it very useable in low light. Focusing down to .7meters is a bit farther than I'd like. Slight distortion. Slight colorshift on the NEX-7. Perfect ergonomics. Almost the same size as the ZM, only slightly heavier.

Bottom line – Two truly amazing lenses with the key differences apart from speed & price are which type of rendering you like – sharp-but-smooth with strong-and-natural colour Leica – or – holy-crap-that's-sharp with warm-and-crispy colour Zeiss. The Sigma 30/2.8 is of course a bargain and a fairly nice lens, probably also very close in technical measurements, but can't compare to either in rendering niceness.

Voigtländer Nokton 40/1.4 – A temperamental lens. Something of a favourite. Turns out 60mm is a great focal length for me. Would probably have a better reputation if it was sold as an f/2 lens, which is how I think of it – an f/2 lens with a f/1.4 overdrive mode. Messy rendering wide open with loads of aberrations. Improves when stopping down to the point of almost feeling like two or even three different lenses in one. Loads of field curvature. Modern colour. Quite a bit of 3D-pop at f/2-2.8 or so. Bokeh can be messy, especially wide open, but is usually nice. Ergonomically the best lens I've used.

Leica Summicron-C 40/2 – A tiny lens, hard to believe that it's full frame, it's almost too small. Better behaved and more consistent than the Nokton. Renders sharply and nicely wide open, but compared to the Nokton at f/2 it's really close. Slightly nicer colour than the Nokton. Bokeh can be messy. Loads of field curvature.

Bottom line – Two nice lenses. I'm a bit torn which one to keep. The Summicron has nicer rendering by a hair, but the Nokton has the f/1.4 'overdrive' and better ergonomics. At the price, it's hard to go wrong with either.

Sorry if I got a bit longwinded.
