Sorry. I thought the marketing of the 35/1.4 was the first of this new development phase/design.

MTF looks good.

Yes, looks very good. Distortion also seems to be well controlled.

The lens construction diagram shows five (!) low-dispersion elements and four (!) aspherical ones.
I don't think any Canon or Nikon lenses have that many special elements.

Overall, a very interesting lens.
Who is it for, though. Pros still using crop cameras? Or maybe videographers?

Yep, but on their own they're still very good.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

It is, the 85 & 150 aren't part of the new design (yet), only the new 120-300. But 85, 150 & older 120-300 are very, very good.

For an effective 27-52.5mmm f2.6 lens? This gives crop users similar dof and light gathering as the 2.8 zooms on FF which is nice, still FF will have advantages in resolution etc.

Its hopefully a decent lens tho.

Hey man, this would be really great on our C300 and a fun way to use a 7DII if I get one as a second body for pixel density/reach on my 200 1.8 plus 1.4xIII.

Sure my 5DIII plus 24-70 II will be better still.

Very cool. Go Sigma, I love seeing good solid competition outside of Canon/Nikon.

This may work for 1.3x crop too at least at the long ends

This might be an ideal set-up with the SL 1 considering it's also not that heavy. I hope it isn't too expensive.

It has to be fairly expensive. As for why pick it up over a full frame + 24-70mm, one major reason is the cost of crop vs FF bodies. FF + 24-70mm is a very popular combo and if you can get similar capabilities with a much cheaper APS-C body then that's a very attractive proposition. The lens itself might cost about the same as a FF 24-70mm.

Interesting stuff, I never thought we'd see something like this outside the smaller formats. It has generated quite a stir: not a full day has passed and there's almost 400 comments on DPReview by now. Probably mostly the equivalence nazis putting down the new lens, but still remarkable nonetheless.

Very impressive - the MTF charts look very good, and the distortion appears to be excellent overall.

That's a nice surprise for the day. Give Sigma some credit.

Yeah that's benchmark it's going to have to get beyond. A stop and 1/3 faster may not help it much if its priced big (I think the comment about it being ff 24-70 price is probably over the top if your talking in terms of the mk2 ) and/or it needs to be stopped down a bit to get the IQ from it .

But then sigma do seem to be pulling rabbits out of the hat quite a bit lately , so there is hope .

I do find it funny how now we are getting DSLR's capable of really good low iso performance (and yes I am talking about the crop bodies as well ) that we now start to see some very good faster lenses coming out

Well, there's never too much low light capability! Especially handholdable / actionstoppable one.

It's impressive to watch how fast photographers are changing their perception on Sigma's innovation, quality and design. This is great news for the entire industry.

There is another thread started at the Alternative Gear and Lenses board on the new Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 DC HSM Art:

This looks like a potential replacement candidate for Canon's 16-35L, depending on whether the price and if the -2mm at the front end works.
