This has always been the beef on Sigma down through the years. Inconsistent QC on their products. Some time you have to purchase two or three to find a good one.

Indeed. Really frustrating though. I didn't even set the second copy up on a tripod to check for front or back focus this time, just took a bunch of pictures. Amazing when it hits, but woefully inconsistent.

Does anyone have a copy of the Sigma that has consistent AF out of the box on a D800/E? That is, from MFD to over 15ft, indoor/outdoor light, left and right AF points? Or are there inherent issues with certain aspects of this lens that we just need to work around? IQ is ridiculously good at 1.4, otherwise I would have called it a day after the first copy.

Yes. Mine is perfect outside the box (all points and distances)

EDIT: wow, I gues s I shouldn't have said anything... Mine is not focusing accurately at infinity... how did I miss that?

The Sigma requires AF tuning for all focus distances (close, medium & infinity), at least my copy did. Trial & error

That's what I'm thinking. This might be inherent in the lens with some copies better than others. The weirdness is if it can't focus at 2.8 or 4 at all distances consistently.

Mine seems to have an issue with outer focus point at infinity. It doesn't have a focusing issue with outer points at normal distances

argh, i hesitantly went ahead with this after having the 85 & 50...I might just send it back when it comes. My 85 & 50 af was so hit & miss. I hated the inconsistency.

I had the 85... I sent in to Gentec for calibration and it worked well after that.

I guess I'll have to wait for Sigma's firmware update for this lens / USB dock.

Are you guys only having issues on the D800/E? I use the Sigma 35 on the D4... (only center focus point)... but it is spot on at all distances.

It seems to be a D800 issue with outer points.. I read that Sigma is working on a firmware fix for this

Damn! Guess I'm "odd man out" again...actually consider this an asset.
Better balance with a Pro/gripped body (of which I have 5) love the heft!

I'd like to say so as well but with a hip replacement in the (very) near future I learned to appreciate lightweight stuff And for events I use two bodies and at least four fast primes (24-35-85 /1.4 and 135/2 or 180/2.8) which means a lot of weight to carry for longer events.

I've never heard of anyone's got beef with how light Leica has been since most shooter, including Henri Cartier-Besson, mostly used 50mm and 35mm on their Leicas. No, it's not true anymore in digital age?

I just received my Sigma and I already own and have been shooting with the Nikon for years. Have only done a few test comparisons but so far the sigma has no AF issues at all distances and all AF points on my D700.

Between the two I think the Sigma is sharper in the center (haven't tested off center yet). Drastically sharper? Not usually as far as I can tell so far. It definitely acquires focus faster though which is great!

I'll try to post some comparison shots.

I just got the 24 and it's so heavy that I'm tempted to just keep my 28 and pick up a 20mm af-d.

My copy was extremely accurate and consistent on my D600 straight out of the box and with no AFMA, even wide open. The majority of opinions I've read tend to agree with that. It's actually much more accurate and consistent than my Nikon 85/1.8G.

Sample variation is a hard truth, but I wouldn't hold a grudge against Sigma for that. Most copies seem absolutely spot-on.

Luck New component of photography these days, I guess....and maybe everything else.
I was an early adopter...no probs. on 6 different bodys, luck of the draw Then there's the high end
convection range I bought my wife. Hooked it up, no leaks...she loves it. Next morning we almost wake
up dead! Flaw in the casting of the aluminum block the gas line connects to. WTF, come and get it boys.
