p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · How good is the 24-70 MKII?

I find that i'm not impressed with my 50L wide open. Even stopped down, the lens just doesn't give me the same look and performance as my 85L. Been thinking of just selling it and getting the 24-70 MKII--since I have a bit more use for that than the 50L. I had the first version of the 24-70, and it was one of my main go-to lenses. I would not hesitate to buy another, but I hear the MKII is a lot better.

Any regrets from current MKII owners?

I upgraded to the 24-70ii. I am very happy with it even though its a big chunk of change to upgrade. What I like best about the ii is that it is a lot sharper at the edges and corners. So if I composed my subject off center and shoot at f2.8, I get a very nice subject separation from the background just because the subject is so sharp.

Get it now, there is a deal going on. I just cut and paste this from another thread.

From Adorama. Enter "S2221112" gift code at checkout. Plus you get 2% back in a gift reward.

I just posted some pics on the nature forum with a 24-70 f/2.8 mk 2 wide open. (one is with the 70-200 at 73 mm...all the exif data is attached).

You can see them here - https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1205707

I like the lens a lot. But still use the 50mm compact macro and 40 mm pancake too. And am lusting for a 35mm, but will play with the toys I have for now.

Never owned the mk I as I had the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 which was sharper than the mk I tested. 24-70L mk II is in another class. You do not have to stop it down other than for DoF, it's tack sharp wide open and just a delight to use. If they had given it IS it would be a 9.9/10 lens rather than a 9.7/10 lens (no lens is perfect).

Some shots, straight from LR all but one wide open.

9.5, they blew it with the hood. Should have kept the old design for barrel protection.

I just ordered this lens so I hope it does live up to its great reviews.

I find the 24-70 II lens fantastic optically. I have no reservation shooting at any FL/aperture combination.
I love shooting with my TS-E lenses but if I could have only one lens, it would be my choice. In fact, I just did that during my recent trip to Brazil.
Here are some night shots.

I tested vs. the 24 LII, 35L, 50L, 85L II, Zeiss 100 Makro Planar and Tokina 16-28 at 2.8 and 5.6 and it is just as sharp focal length for focal length at those apertures. It has more vignetting at 2.8 and more distortion but I no longer shoot my primes unless I need the stop or effect. It is a really great lens.

Thank you all! I'm swaying myself to get it, because of the $200 instant rebate going on right now.

Too bad that Adorama deal is dead, I would have pulled the trigger tonight!

I don't have experience with the old hood, but it was a design unique due to the fact the 24-70 mk I extended at the wide end, unlike other designs including the new mk II.

The 24-70mk2 is absolutely insane. It's in the same class as all the lenses that came after the 50L (starting with the 24L mk2). It has a very distinct look and rivals the primes. Obviously it isn't as fast, but I have definitely reduced my use of the 24/35 and esp. 50L due to the new 24-70.

I just really miss the old hood design, it was brilliant. But overall absolutely a no-brainer.

You think the 50L is less good than the 35L? Huh, never thought of that shoot my 50 many times more often than the 35L. Use both less now for sure.

Absolutely no regrets, it is a fantastic lens with that new great "look". You need to take a deep breath before using that credit card, but once you're pass that, all is Good.

I don't care for many of the characteristics of the 50L. It's the most hated lens in my drawer, at the same time it's the lens that I want to love the most, but I just can't. It's complicated

Great lens, definitely an improvement on the previous version in every respect except vignetting (which is no biggie). My only regret is that Canon priced it so high

It's absolutely exceptional. Sharper than pretty much everything in my kit bag, including a number of L primes at f2.8.

The bokeh is more attractive too, and the "starburst" effect is way better than the previous version.

I don't regret buying it, and for me it was worth every penny.

The 24-70 mk2 is so good I sold my 24TSE, 35L and Zeiss 50 f1.4 after I tested it. First zoom I have owned with sharp enough corners for landscape work. Also great wide open for star scapes.

My prior zooms were the 24-105 and briefly the 24-70 mk1. I just wish they had a 14-24 in the same league.

It's as good as any of my L & Zeiss prime lenses, at any aperture. Wide open it has more vignetting than faster primes.

I'm a bit curious about this lens. I'm interested in the "look" that the lens imparts rather than sharpness. Unfortunately it s somewhat difficult to discern from web images. Anybody care to spare a few raw files ?
