I love the second shot. I've been trained to try to capture these elements when shooting sports: ball, face, action, and contact. It's rare that you will get all of those elements in a single shot, but the 2nd image has three out of the four (with contact being the least important of the four elements anyway).

The first shot isn't as compelling to me. It appears to be a little soft and the face is a profile shot. The composition isn't the best either (although it's what you had to work with from that shooting position). The composition is a little too centered, although the action is pulling me towards the right and I'd like to see more dead space on the right as a filler (somewhere for this "action" to go) vs the left side where the dead space is in this shot.

Keep shooting. You'll certainly get better with experience (everyone does).

Thanks, yea it was an awkward field with no room anywhere to position myself besides ~25 yrds past thrid just off the foul line. I think the softness has alot to do with my 80-200 being soft at 200/2.8. I understand the space concept, i could crop the photo looser, but being that it was for newsprint and not very large I wanted you to be able to atleast recognize the face.

Im excited to keep shooting some sports though for the most part the action never ends which keeps things interesting.
