New Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS patent released

It's been more than a decade since Canon released a "Diffractive Optics" super telephoto lens.

However, it does not seem that Canon gave up on this technology as new EF 400mm f/4 DO IS patents keep emerging.

Thanks for the update

I was thinking about this lens yesterday and the 400mm 2.8 II canon outperforms the old 400 green DO. It will be interesting to see a new lens. I would like to read more about the science of the design.

This lens is not as poplar as the 400/5.6L. I was hoping Canon would release an IS version of 400/5.6L or renew the versatile 100-400/5.6L

Just thinkin. A canon 500mm 5.6 lense with no IS. Wouldn't that be a bad azz lightweight BIF lense?

A hand holdable 500mm F5.6 would be ideal.

Canon offers no affordable option to better the 400mm F5.6 reach & IQ.
Sigma may be the hope for 500mm F5.6 option

The Sigma 500 f4.5 is pretty close to your spec:

3,1kg, no IS. I used it for a year before upgrading to the Canon 600 f4 IS mkII. The Sigma is sharp when focused accurately, but lack of IS/OS is a killer, at least with my preference for hand-held shooting.
