i am using the tokina 17 3.5 at-x pro and the 24 2.8 for wide angle shots.

i dont know if its better/worse comparing to the 17-40 (but i would like to know, because im thinking about getting one).

The 17-40L is sharper in the centre than the Tokina AT-X 17/3.5, but the Tokina is definitely sharp enough in the centre for just about any purpose. The Tokina is noticeably sharper at the edges and especially in the corners. In general, this is true for comparing most Canon L-zooms with high quality prime lenses - the L-zooms are almost peerless for sharpness (i.e. resolution + contrast) in the centre, but not as good as really good prime lenses in the outer regions of the image. The new 24-70/2.8L II and 70-200/2.8L IS II are exceptions, as they extend their excellent image quality right into the corners, and there are few primes that are better (but there are some...).

Here's some threads with comparisons of ultra-wide zoom and prime lenses. Most include the 17-40L and AT-X, or at least one of them.

My Samyang 14 has significant moustache distortion, but it is an amazingly sharp lens. With PP corrections and cropping to 16-18mm range, this would be a great choice for an inexpensive prime. Very little vignetting at f/5.6, but quite a lot wide open.

I'd love to see a shoot-out of the 17-40, 16-35II, Tokina 16-28 and Samyang 14! That would be very interesting. The Tokina does get positive comments about its IQ, but I haven't seen much direct comparison to the more expensive choices.

I echo the above comments that the 17 TS-E is the correct lens for these jobs, as well as a tripod most of the time. But I've gotten by until now with the 24 TS-E II, 16-35 II, and Samyang 14. I'm getting the 17 TS-E this week, so I may do a comparison between it and the 16-35 and 14 for fun.

As for a tripod and interiors, I shoot with flash (with GF lightsphere), so a tripod wouldn't help.
greg

what does this mean? a tripod will always help when shooting interiors, for so many reasons.

If you take a look at Greg's website interiors, you'll see what he means.

Granted, a tripod and multiple flash units (or different bounce technique) might satisfy others' needs more fully. But his approach seems to work for his clientele.

jcolwell - thanks!

do you know how is the old 24 2.8 against the 17-40?

i really like the 24 2.8, but the 17-40 is better than it and the 17 at-x, maybe i will get the zoom.
