p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Wishing for Nikon equivalent of 70-300 L

Does anyone else wish Nikon would make a similar lens?I know they just came out with the 80-400, but that's a different purpose lens...The 70-200 f4 is different as well... too short. I hope they'll update the 70-300 VR at some point soon, as it's not a bad lens, but not as good as something like the Canon L.

The provocative design that has always intrigued me is the Canon 70-300 DO. Makes for a very compact lens, though weighty but the peculiarities of the fresnel glass is correctable PP. May not be as sharp as the conventional version, but the size has its advantages.

Could you elaborate how the 70-300VR and the 80-400mm don't fit your needs?

70-300 VR isn't great at 300mm; it's essentially a good but not great consumer lens. 80-400 VR is bigger and heavier than necessary.

Agreed. The 70-300 VR II, even on my D700, beyond 200-225 mm were progressively unimpressive.

I agree with the lack of sharpness on the 70-300 VRII as well.... although I did find it much sharper with FX than a DX body.

That is unfortunate that there isn't anything equivalent then. It seems if you want that range, you'll have a pretty heavy set up with Nikon. What about a 70-200/4 with a 1.4TC? Obviously there is some compromise but you also have a 70-200/4 out of it.

The 70-300L has as good IQ as any zoom Canon makes IMHO. As good as the 70-300VR is for the price it's not in that class. The new 80-400 is close.

I would hope that the Canon 70-300L is better, given the price difference!

Either way, it seems to me that Canon (and even perhaps Olympus and Panasonic) is creating new lenses/iterating old lenses much faster than Nikon, who's doing OK with FX lenses, poor with CX lenses and abysmal with new DX lenses. That's something we'll just have to live with.

+1 Only a change to Canon is going to fill that gap in your lens line-up

I agree that 250-300 isn't tack sharp but it's not like the photos are going to be throw aways. It's still a great lens, especially for the price! i got a mint copy, used, for $375. You can't compare it the $1400 canon version

Why? Because Nikon hadn't updated the 80-400 VR for years? too bad.

"Too bad?" What?

He wrote that because he doesn't think Nikon will updated or supplement the current 70-300mm for a long time and neither do I.

I think Nikon has more pressing updates than to modify a lens that has both AF-S and second generation VR in it.

For me personally, I love my little 70-300 VR. It's cheap, light and portable. I wouldn't buy a high quality 70-300 at the sacrifice of ~50% increase in weight and triple the price. I think the 70-300 is a great value.

Obviously we all have different needs... just my thoughts.

I asked why he thinks that - because they are slow to update lenses?. Too bad "if they won't update it." I'd love to buy such a lens.

Out of curiosity, such as?

... The 70-300 L isn't 50 % heavier though. It's 2 lbs.

It's not just an update, it's a different lens class. I just think that Nikon will continue updating the older lenses before creating a high-end, slow 70-300 zoom.

For some reason Canon has a wide range of similar lenses, for example four different 70-200 lenses and three different 70-300 lenses. Nikon typically only offers 1-2 of each.

Frankly, it's practically a miracle that Nikon finally developed a new 70-200/4.

My guess would be the 300 F4
