I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum for such a question, but you guys would know.

Homeowners or rental insurance will not cover damage. I've looked into insurance through professional organizations, but of course the premiums are priced for professionals. I have a lot of expensive gear but I photograph birds to feed my soul (and not my family). How do others in this situation handle this, especially considering most of us are carrying super telephotos that cost as much as a used car?

I have started looking into the same thing. I called my State Farm agent and was quoted $45/year fro $3000 in coverage.

I was able to add lens coverage onto my homeowners policy. I just had to have the local camera shop write an appraisal and record images/serial numbers from all of my bodies/lenses, lens bags, tripods, etc.

I added a rider to my homeowners policy. It just took a 10 minute phone call to add $5000 worth of coverage for my camera gear.

I'm insuring 15,000 dollars worth of gear with state farm for 16$ per month! If anything happens to the gear, it's replaced with no deductable.

Wow, is that via a rider on your homeowners? Or a separate policy?

Have a rider on my home owners insurance with state farm.a friend of mine was denied through them for what reason I am not sure. State Farm may have thought that he was doing it as a business not a hobby, but just guessing.

If you sell your work, considered a business, homeowner policy would not work.
Another option is to join NANPA and Chubb will insure your gear.

I go through State Farm under a Personal Properties Policy. I pay around $90/ year for around $6000 worth of equipment. They do ask if the policy is for professional or hobby. If you use it for professional I believe the rate is a little higher than using it as a hobby. With my policy there isn't' a deductible and the coverage covers just about anything.; lost, stolen, accidental breakage etc. I've accidentally broke my older 80-400 lens a couple times and they've sent me a check both times for around $800 each time to cover the expense to fix it.
