p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Hi : ) !!! - How should I understand "Demo" ??

Hi,

I have walked several times to a photo busines,
and the demo will be offered next to the new item.
Sometimes the new item is not there, but the
demo is. In the past I have heard an explanation
of some sort, or the other, about a demo item.
The explanation was, that basically, a demo
item sits there until somebody asks about
the functioning of the product. These
are, as I understand it, the only times that a demo
will be used. Whether a lens, or camera, lamp
head, flash, battery back, etc. the demo is only
there to be briefly shown to clients how a product
works or how it is supposed to be used. In my imagination,
it is an item that has not been part of the rent
department in that reputable photo store where I
usually buy from. Neither it is considered a used item,
or part of that department in the store. The Demo is the
kind of item that could be labeled as new minus the little
use given to a product in a period of between one year
and three years! Would I be right in all that I have written
above, or what would you say that a demo is??

Thank you in advance, kind regards,

igmolinav : ) !!!

Hi,

Thank you for your message : ) !!!

So, basically, demo is sort of "very
new!" A reputable dealer will not have
used the equipment in its rental
department, nor a member of the
company may have taken it home
to play with it.

Even if the price of the demo is as low
as 24% less than the new item's price,
one should not doubt that the mer-
chandise is in a good state.

Thank you, kind regards,

igmolinav : )

Correct. However, demo equipment can be well used/abused in a busy store.

How does one decide to keep it when one mail orders it? Many stores have
a fifteen day or a month return policy. How does one know if it is in good
shape when one deals with a lamp head, a battery pack, or a lens? How
does one know if it has not been abused?

Kind regards,

The demo lens can be used a lot in the store. It often also have had 50 people touching it's glass with their fingers. If you are unlucky it has been dropped or used in a harsh way. It can also be like brand new. But you never know

You can't get reliable answers to these questions from an internet forum.

Compared to buying a new item, when you buy a demo item there's a risk that it won't meet your expectations. The risk should be offest by a reduction in price. If you can't tolerate the risk, and you don't like the return policy, then don't buy a demo.

You just bought a highly abused piece of equipment. You're trying to convince yourself it will be mint. You know what happens to demo gear? My kids play with them in the stores.
