About to pull the trigger on a new body or two new bodies. I am a wedding and portrait photographer and do the occasional sports. Opinions?

What is your average wedding file size? How often you do huge prints? Do you shoot jpeg or raw? Do you do your own post?

A D800/e and a D3/D3s or two. If you just got the D4, what would be your backup?

More weddings - get D4 as long as you have another backup.

More portraits - get D800's

I have 3 D3's but one that is giving me issues that I am trying to sell.
Huge prints, nothing bigger than 20-30
Shoot RAW with jpegs
Do my own post

Im coming from in todays world, ancient technology with the D3, so just trying to get an idea.
Or should I move to the dark side, lol

Huge print means long side has over 44 in size.

If I were you, I would stay away from D800 line. If money is no problem and you shoot video, get D4, which has one-and-half stop ISO advantage over D3. Otherwise, stay with D3.

I have a D4 & D800 and I can say that they compliment each other nicely. D4 is my primary while the D800 is used for portraits, studio, macro and detail shots i.e. weddings. The button layout of both cameras are very similar so switching from body to body will not be an issue. With this combination you will have the best of both worlds.

You already have D3's so get the D4 as you'll flipping love it. Keep one or 2 of the D3's for backup.

The D4 is very much a do all. It'll eat your weddings for breakfast. Will produce stunning portraits, and sports is its bread and butter. Win win

But, I agree with ADCOLE. I too have a D4 and D800 and the combo is epic.

OK, I'll jump into this fray, and thanks in advance for the insights to be gained.

I'm a bird-in-flight shooter, with a portfolio that includes many unexpected shots that I must grab on the quick. Case in point - this past weekend while shooting on a ranch, I had a Roadrunner run across the road in front of me, carrying a lizard in its beak. THIS is a money shot if there ever was one...I came to a screeching halt, jumped out of the truck, and started firing away. I got him with his lizard, but what I wasn't expecting was him flying. Roadrunners seldom fly, and to catch one in midair is another money shot. I had my D600 and it just didn't let me fire quickly enough to get the shot, partly because of being slow to lock onto the target.

My current setup consists of two D600s, a 70-200 f/2.8, 300 f/2.8 and a 500 f/4, all VRII. I think I'm good in the lens dept., but I suspect that shooting with the D4 would make getting those split-second moving shots a little more likely. Would really appreciate advice - would I benefit from a D4 & D600 combo? And for what it's worth, my D600 shots are "gin" clear and spectacular!

Oh - I'm also considering the D3s, if I can find one that has a low (<10k) shutter count and is in like-new condition.

Err the D4 would make it far more likely. I find the D4 always seems to be one step ahead of me. At times it feels like cheating to be honest. I owe many many shots to that camera that would have normally been missed based on my skill level.

I have owned the D600 and do own a D800 and can safely say the D4 is on a whole new level of speed and operability. It's a different beast altogether, hence the significant price premium. It's f-ing expensive for a very good reason.

If you're already using the D3/D3s, holding D800 even with battery grip is not the same. D4 of course my friend.

Right on. Grantland and BenV, it is posted that it is giving me issues and priced I think fair for the issue. If I cant get rid of it, then I will just hold on and send in when I have time. Food for thought. By no means does the money flow like water, so it would be either 2-d800's or 1 d4

+1 for ct8292! Except that I upgraded, first, from a D3s to the D4 and then ditto for my D3s backup. I am fortunate to afford the luxury of two D4s. But I would rather have one D4 than any combination of two or three other cameras.

When you are working very fast to capture non recurring candid events (especially in low available light) the difference is that important. If you have plenty of time and light, and each shot is not essential or repeatable, then many cameras are just fine (D3, D800/600, etc.).

D4 in a heartbeat. You can rent a second body for now if you need it.

Good move. You made a very sensible decision. Looking forward to seeing your pics from the D4.

Used to use d3's for weddings, sold it got a d800 as I didn't like the d4 still being a low resolution camera compared to the d800.

If the d5 is 24mpixel or preferably higher I will get one to compliment my d800, if not I will get a another d800 or whatever replaces it.
