OK, I'll jump into this fray, and thanks in advance for the insights to be gained.
I'm a bird-in-flight shooter, with a portfolio that includes many unexpected shots that I must grab on the quick. Case in point - this past weekend while shooting on a ranch, I had a Roadrunner run across the road in front of me, carrying a lizard in its beak. THIS is a money shot if there ever was one...I came to a screeching halt, jumped out of the truck, and started firing away. I got him with his lizard, but what I wasn't expecting was him flying. Roadrunners seldom fly, and to catch one in midair is another money shot. I had my D600 and it just didn't let me fire quickly enough to get the shot, partly because of being slow to lock onto the target.
My current setup consists of two D600s, a 70-200 f/2.8, 300 f/2.8 and a 500 f/4, all VRII. I think I'm good in the lens dept., but I suspect that shooting with the D4 would make getting those split-second moving shots a little more likely. Would really appreciate advice - would I benefit from a D4 & D600 combo? And for what it's worth, my D600 shots are "gin" clear and spectacular!
Oh - I'm also considering the D3s, if I can find one that has a low (<10k) shutter count and is in like-new condition.
