I have been taking 24-105 f4 IS for vacation and it worked great. However, with my new 24-70 II which does not have IS and reach but very sharp. Just wondering which one should I take!

I posted a "Rome Trip" spread where I used the Mark II f2.8 on the trip a few weeks ago

My thoughts:

What sold me on the Mark II was the f2.8. It really paid off indoors (Basilicas and the like) or at night. Having to not ratchet the ISO was a nice feature but avoiding blurry pictures because I had no mono/tripod was a plus. Yes, it is heavy. I did lug the 5D Mark III + lens for 7-9 miles a day. I first tried the lens at a museum - its not a macro lens, but it fared well.

I used to take the 24-105 rather than the 24-70 on vacation too, but after switching to the 24-70 II I took it to Paris last November and ....wow! I took a lot of night shots, dim light shots, it was superb. I didn't miss the extra reach and I think the only time it came off the body was for the TSE 24 II.

I guess it depends on the type of vacation you're taking and what else your packing.
