I rented the Tok 16-28 recently and it does shine on the D800 as DxOMark have claimed. Acceptable at f/2.8 and very sharp @ f/4. Vignetting, flare and distortion are very minimal @ 16mm. I will probably purchase the lens in the near future but I want to know if there are other alternatives less than $1,000.

for under $1000, I'd check out the samyang 14, or the nikon 16-35. If you want the sharpest, spend the extra $500 and get the nikon 14-24.

I have spent a lot on bodies and lenses recently and $1,000 is really pushing it so $500 more and the wife will put me in a bodybag. I will definitely check out the other lenses you have mentioned. Thanks!

Check out the new 18-35mm. Not a super wide, but the quality from another recent thread showed it was top notch in the corners.

Are you referring to the D or the AF-S version?

Just package up a (empty) box and take it with you to work tell the wife you sold a lens.
Then buy the 14-24 and say you used the funds from the lens you sold to buy it.
The wife will never know.

However, if you have a boot fetish like my dad. And as if by magic pairs of boots (lenses) seem to be multiplying in the closet - then the wife will suspect something is a miss. The key is moderation.

If you have to stay under a grand:

20 f/2.8
Used 17-35

If your willing risk the Bag then the 16-35VR

ocir, do some research into whether or not the lenses you might want have significant focus shift as you stop down the aperture. It won't matter if you always shoot wide open but that would be unlikely.

That's interesting to read. I own a 17-35, was considering the 18-35 AFS for travel, also maybe to get improved corners at the wide end (17-20mm) when stopped down, though I still happily shoot 17-20mm at f5.6 and beyond. Just wondering what kind of improvement, if any, the 18-35AFS might offer, and the lighter weight and smaller size would be benficial for travel. Would appreciate links to comparisons if they are available.

To the OP, other than primes, I don't think you can get any Nikon UW zoom (other than the 18-35) for new under $1000. All the options (16-35 used, 17-35 used, Tokina 16-28, 18-35, primes) have strengths of their own and without knowing your priorities (size, weight, filters, max aperture, shooting apertures) it would be hard to recommend a particular option. Of course, since you are already happy with the Tokina, you know there's at least one option that satisfies!

There's also the Sigma 15-30 if you can find one.

I don't have the 18-35G yet... it should be here today and I intend to use it in place of my 17-35AFS. I walk/use public transportation and travel so weight has become more important to me than having f2.8. I have sold many images made with the 17-35mm over the past four years and hope to continue with to do so with the 18-35mm.

The 14-24mm was the sharpest of the Nikon zooms I've used (rental) but it does not fit my style of shooting. You have more options now than ever but ever more demanding sensors too. It may be worth renting the lenses you are interested in as the responses here will be all over the place... everyone has different needs. Samyang 14mm would also be within your budget and may be worth a look.

From my personal experience I found:

Best value for money: Tamron 17-35 2.8-4, Sigma 12-24 HSM1, Rokinon 14mm 2.8
Best performance: Zeiss 21 2.8, Nikon 14-24
Worst value for money: Tokina 17-35 f/4 (Maybe a bad copy), Zeiss 18 3.5
Most convenient: Tamron 17-35 2.8-4, Zeiss 21 2.8
Best build: Zeiss 21 2.8

Samyang 14mm - only other lenses (wide) I would get over this would be maybe the 16-35mm and obviously the 14-24.

This was taken with the D700 + Samyang 14mm. Single image/exposure. No focus bracketing was done

I would go with the Tokina 16-28 unless you need filters. The new 18-35 if you need filters. The Samyang 14 might be great too....though I wonder if that might be too wide. Those will all keep you under budget. You might be able to find a Nikkor 17-35 used, though people seem mixed about its performance on the D800.

What I'd avoid based on what I've read/used: Sigma 12-24, Tokina 17-35. I just used a Zeiss 18...don't know if I'd recommend that either. Corners were just plain mushy. Doesn't seem like the best value.
