It may seem a little odd to combine the lowly D7100 with the 600mm VR but the combination is a god send to me.

I had sold my Canon 800mm IS and 1D IV for the MP and dynamic range of the D800E. I have been working with the 500mm VR and 600mm VR mostly with a TC-14E II to offset the loss of 1.3X body crop and the 600mm verses. while I had gotten some nice results, and loved the DR, I was not getting level of gain I was hoping for.

Well the D7100 has changed all that. Results without TC-14E and just stunning!! And I love the 6 FPS verses the 4FPS in D800.

A few samples

Flicker - only crop is from 8x12 to 8x10

100% crop of above no sharpening

Heavy crop no sharpening

Nay sayers have been saying there is little difference between D7 K and D300 and now between D7 K and D7.1 K, but I have noticed incremental improvement in IQ with every DX model from D 70 to current DX standard. Wonderful shots Bill, thanks for sharing your experience.
I just got mine but I can't lug a super tele, so I have to make do with a 300 F 4 with tcs. Today I tried my D7.1 K with 300 F4 and 1.7 tc and I was glad to see reach x IQ was better than any light weight stuff I had tried in past including, Sigma 170-500, canon 100-400L, canon 400 5.6 L, Nikon 80-400 VR D and Tamron 200-500.

Geez, and I thought the 80-400 thread was convincing me to spend money...

The Nikon D7100: The worlds no1 optical quality TC! (Well, the 1V2 is no slouch either with the 300/2.8VR or 400/2.8VR...)

Would love to hear opinions from anyone coming from a D300/s (who possible were waiting for a D400 but gave in), to a D7100.... it's tempting. Yet I can't help thinking a D400 might be just around the corner.
I guess build quality/size (and "consumer" layout) and buffer are main concerns (for birds).

These are great Bill!

Did you tried DX mode on the D800(E)?
It gives you less MP's but a bigger buffer and with grip 6pfs (like the D7100).
Is there any/much difference in AF between the D800(E) and D7100?
And how 's the difference in build?
I'm still waiting for the D400

The difference between the D300 and the D7100... Kind of like the difference between a Chevy Malibu and a Chevy Corvette... The difference in the image quality is not even close... anyone who is using a D300/s and holding out for a D400 should perhaps get their head examined... or at least shaken to check for rocks... IF... and IF... a D400 ever comes out, then just use the D7100 for a backup camera to it... Especially if we are talking birders.. I mean, most of them have so much money tied up in Lenses alone, that to spend $1100 on a body should be no big deal...

Just my thoughts...

Jim

Definite size difference. AF seems on par to me.

I was a D300 owner, hoping for a D400 announcement, but jumped on the D7100 when it was released.

The D7100 is a better camera in every way except handling. I can live with that. The Sandisk Extreme Pro cards clear the buffer very fast, it has not been an issue for me, and the build quality appears to be just fine. It's not a magnesium brick, but Nikon has indicated it has the same level of weather sealing as the D800.

You'll wonder why you waited when you point it at a flying bird and see the difference in AF speed.

Thanks, with a 500VR the weight of a body is not so important to me.

Thanks Jim and also binary visions for both your thoughts. Not to take over this thread at all. Sadly here (Australia) its not $1100, but about $1250 grey market without warranty or $1600 local. Have not heard much about concerning issues like other recent bodies though so may be worth a gamble with grey....

I have a D300 and now have a D7100. The build quality is very similar. As for weather sealing, I left my D7100 on a tripod along some railroad tracks the other day, and went back to town to get a drink. In the meantime it started to rain. Camera was fine despite being unprotected. Maybe I got lucky. The AF is just as fast as the D300, but it definitely can lock on in dimmer light. The only thing the D7100 does not have is a deep buffer. I think it's Nikon's best camera for wildlife right now. If a D400 does appear, I could sell the D7100 easily enough. But then again, I really like the more compact size and the 24mp allow very sharp cropping.

I picked mine up this weekend and was able to get it out yesterday for some AF adj and a briefing few moments shooting my daughter on her swing. Thus far, I am impressed with the camera's ability and speed in driving the 500VR. Very impressive body from Nikon.

I use my D7100 with the 200-400, and they are a great pairing! I shot at the Toronto Zoo a couple of weekends ago.. and I was very happy with the results. Even on a dreary overcast day.

Is it true it does not have a back focus button? I mean can you program it like you could the D7000?

It does not have a dedicated AF-ON button. You can program the AE-L button on the back to perform the same function, though.

I had used the DX mode on D800E from time to time, but the D7100 creates way better files than the D800E in DX mode. SO:

D7100 much better than D800E in crop mode which I found slightly better than D7000

D7100 will enable me to sell my D800 (back up to D800E) and if a D400 shows up I will gladly buy one if and only if:

1) 24MP or better with no AA filter ( non starter without this)
2) 7 FPS or Better
3) Much bigger buffer

If it has 1, 2, and 3 I would pay $2000 for it in a heart beat

That was my other concern too. Does it feel similar to use than the D300's AF-ON though? I use it exclusively.
Can't get to a camera store at the present time to have a test.

It's in the same location as the D300 AE-L button, so it's significantly to the left of the AF-ON location, however the body for the D7100 isn't quite as large, so I do not find it uncomfortable to reach. On the D300, when holding it normally, the AF-ON button is right where my thumb lands, whereas the AE-L button requires me to reach. On the D7100, I do not have to reach for the button.
