I don't think it can be done. I know there is a way to put Nikon on a Canon, but not a canon on a nikon.

The 400/5.6L is a great lens. Wish I never sold mine.

Why not just get a canon body? I'm sure you can get the lens and a body used for under $2000.

The Nikon mount is smaller than the Canon mount, so no.

Flange focal distance (the distance between the flange and the sensor is 46.5mm on Nikon and 44mm on Canon. Thus, you can add 2.5mm to a Nikon lens and slap it on a Canon camera, but you can't ever put a Canon lens on a Nikon mount, because the focal point would be in front of the sensor.

Nikon 300f/4 + TC 1.4 = 420 f/5.6 ? I have used this combo on a D800e and was stunned by the results! IQ of both will be same I think.

Why would you not just get an 80-400?

You can have a partial replacement barrel and mechanics done by an expert, but it will be thousands of dollars if you want AF and auto aperture control. You'd be better off finding an old 400/2.8 AF-I or AF-S.

Nikon 400 f/5.6 Lens

Only limiting factor then is yourself and how fast you can twist the focus ring.

Jim, the size! and I have 70-200 f4,--that I can't do without--, and with 400mm prime, I can add on tc(s) that will have a decent IQ.

With the 80-400 the 70-200/4.0 is less important. The reviews I read say it's a great lens at almost the whole FL.
Weight is a little more than the Canon 400, but much less than both. No lens change necessary.
I would say the 80-400 is less bulky (at least to transport). Filter size is 77mm for both.
Only big difference is price, but it will come down after a couple of months.

Well ... if you have the 80-400, you don't need the 70-200 f/4 with you .. so there is a HUGE savings in bulk and weight right there ... and if you search the Nikon forum you'll find a nice thread by Steve Perry with 80-400 +TC images that are decent ... at least the 1.4 for sure.

My vote is the AF-S 300mm f/4 + TC-14E 420mm @ f/5.6 with amazing IQ.

In any practical sense, no, so get a 7D or other Canon body to use with the Canon 400 5.6 or give it up and get the 80-400 AF-S VR or 300 AF-S with 1.4x TC.

As the matter of fact, I am considering going this hybrid way. Before D3, I was shooting 1DII for many years and loved the camera.
Intuitively I think the 400 f5.6---a prime--+tc 1.4x would give a much better IQ than the 80-400 f5.6---a higly zoom-- + tc 1.4x.
