Need some help picking out a lens. Looking to buy a macro lens to shoot flowers, and other objects, extremely close to create abstract compositions. Rented the Nikon 105vr last weekend but it does not work as well as I would like as I get close. The focus depth of field narrows a lot when I get close to the subject. I know Sigma and Tamron also make macro lens and that I could go up to 180mm or down to 60mm. I would appreciate some suggestions on other lenses to look at from those of you who have them.

You will do better with this question in the macro forum.

but since you are here......look at the Sigma 150mm macro. Built like a tank, 1-to-1 focal ratio, larger if you add extension tubes. Mine is very sharp. I find that the autofocus works very well at most ranges down to about 1.5 feet. Closer than that it's best to manually focus anyway.

The depth of field will be extremely narrow at macro magnification, regardless of the lens. Looking for a different lens won't solve that.

Your problem is not gear its technique. Look up "focus stacking".
