I will order 6-7 new hard drives for my Drobo's. 3 or 4 TB in size. Should I go for the WD Red or the WD Black? I'm thinking both about the price and performance here.

The Red's are probably the better choice, being specifically designed for NAS applications. The Blacks are faster, but are designed for standalone use not array use. Accordingly the Red's have TLER timeouts set correctly for RAID which can make the array more stable. They probably use less power and make less heat too as they spin slower.

Make sure to burn-in the drives. When we were using WD Red drives, we saw higher than normal infant mortality.

Thanks everyone. I like the Red drives. But I don't think they have 4TB of those? If choosing those I will probably wait until WD makes those in the 4TB size also.

You did not mention which model Drobo you have. The hard drive compatibility does vary with the different models of Drobo.

It's for the Drobo S Gen 1 and the Drobo S USB 3. Both those drives are compatible.

I cannot use a Drogbo, but we normally run with the Constellation drives in the NAS. They recently qualified a 4TB drive.

I had Green drives in my Drobo. But I'm replacing those drives with larger Red drives

Those 4TB drives are just coming out, and are of the latest generation: Constellation ES.3 with 1TB per platter. I just received the 1TB version today. Tested the SAS hot-plug feature - it worked. Linux placed it online without even rebooting! Tests indicate good serial read performance of 170 MB/s in the outer zone. These drives are cooler than Cheetah 15K, but do need airflow.
