The camera mount is designed to support the weight of the camera body. So, if the lens weighs more than the camera body, it should be supported. Also, remember that all of the weight of the camera body is close to the mount, resulting in less torque on the mount ... something to consider on longer lens.

My general rule of thumb is that if a lens weighs more than two pounds or is longer than 4 inches, I support it.

I had the mount of my Sigma 150 come loose by carrying the camera around with the lens attached. Somehow the screws worked themselves out of the threads.

Sigma however fixed it for free.

Basically they tightened the remaining screws and replaced one missing screw.

I would not carry or hold a camera with a heavy lens like that anymore.

Collared lenses = hold by the lens.

Hanging straight down (ie the mount is parallel to the ground) might be able to get away with some of the smaller collared lenses (70-200, 200 micro, 70-180 etc).
