Interesting. What do you plan on using your new camera for? What are the chances of a D400 still coming out?

Simply pathetic that Nikon could produce such a great (flagship DX?) camera with such a poor buffer.
What did they save $5?

Only thing I can think of is that there will be a D400 announced this summer,
or a D7100s or D7100h or maybe a D7100b?

This should help! (Turns head and laughs violently so that no one can see it). Mr. liar-of-the-century compares the d7100, d600, & d7000 IQ. My favorite part? When Mr. liar-of-the-century compares ISO @ 12,800 b/n all three DSLRs. The D600 is WAYYYYY cleaner, but here is the king of lying's response:

"The D600 is cleanest as expected, but not by enough for me to want to pay the extra money or to lug it around. The D7100 is more than good enough for me."

Really, Krockwell? 30.0grams (D600) vs. 26.8grams (D7100). Or is it the appr. $500 difference that will keep photographers from finally pulling the trigger on that FF they've been salivating for.....or in the case of the D700, which can be had used for $1,300

Here's my guess for the OP's new kit:

D7100
Sigma 35mm 1.4
300mm f4
TC 1.4

:o)

Yes, most likely. I have been thinking about getting a Samyang 14mm as well however.

jtjacka wroteThis does look like a very nice lens. I have mainly been leaning towards the D7100 now because it will allow me to get more lenses and a nice tripod immediately.

Hmm slippery slope to LBA !

I recently went to NZ for 6 weeks, I took the D800, D600 and 5 lenses, including the 3kgs Sigma 120-300, plus 2 TCs. 95% of my shots covering everything from birds (I'm a very keen birder), portraits and cityscsapes to panoramic landscapes (NZ has some of the world's best) were taken with just 2 of my lenses (the 120-300 and Zeiss 21mm). TBH I could have got away leaving the rest at home.

Moral ? Quality not quantity. Buy the best lenses you can afford and don't compromise (and this from someone who did it the 'wrong' way, buying 30+ lenses via incremental increases in lens IQ .. but I've now seen the light)

Oh I forgot the fun bit - spending your money

If I'm not mistaken I think you mentioned your budget is US$4,700 ?

If so here's the kit I'd buy (all used) :

D600 (ca. $1,500)
Zeiss 21mm/2.8 (or Nikon 16-35) (ca. $1,500 or $1,100)
Sigma 35/1.4 (I love this FL) (ca. $750)
Nikon 70-200/4 VR (ca. $1,300)

Buy used from Adorama, KEH or B&H.

There is a big difference between:
a) going on a hike (primary purpose) and bringing a camera to take a few shots (secondary purpose)
b) going on a photo adventure (primary purpose) where you have to hike to get there

Backpacking rule #1 is lightweight. I have a D700, D200, and D3200. If I go hiking I bring the D3200 with the kit lens and maybe the 55-200 because it's light, that's why I bought it. It will take good pictures if I can. I don't like the controls, but I can put up with it. Once I get above treeline I can wear the plastic body and kit lens around my neck so it's handy, at least for a little while. With bigger gear it lives in the pack and only comes out when we take a hiking break. More photos get taken if the camera is handy.

Take your 50 pound backpack to the camera store. Pick up a small plastic body like D3100/D3200/D5200 with DX kit lenses. Then D7100 with an 18-200. Then D600 and D800 with FX lenses. Walk around the store for 10 minutes with your backpack and the different gear. I predict weight will be a deciding factor.

I think it's OK to have 2 setups, a light (decent) one, and a heavy nice one. Get the light cheap one first, and when you "outgrow it", get the better one. Here in New England we have nice fall foliage and waterfalls in the spring. In those cases it turns into "a photo adventure" and I'll bring heavier gear.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Had to look up what that meant. Then I found this http://photographylife.com/diseases-that-plague-photographers. Scary stuff.

I believe most of the time it will be more of a photo adventure. My girlfriend has a D5000 and the two kit lenses that came with it, I believe the 18-55mm and 55-200mm. And then I will have whatever I end up with.

Weather sealing is important to me because I do live in Washington (rain) so I do want a body with good weather sealing.

If you feel the difference, your backpack is the deciding factor. I can run around with my Lowepro Vertex 200 all day (with 70-200 2.8, 2 bodies and bag of primes) and don't feel a difference if I just have my D800E and Sigma 35 1.4 in there. If the backpack is good, you won't feel the weight, if it hurts after an hour, then it's not the backpack for you.

If you're going to washington state, strongly consider weather proofing when deciding on a camera.

Uh, a good backpack will help you carry the weight better, but there's no substitute for simply having less (or lighter) stuff.

My Osprey pack is about as good as I could ask for in terms of making sure the weight is distributed properly, but you will still feel a few extra pounds, especially if you are exerting yourself. There's a big difference between "running around all day" and being on a strenuous, back-country hike for a day or two or three, or more.

Firstly, I don't think "Mr. Liar-of-the-century" is quite a liar. In fact, it clearly seems to me that he just states his views. Who are you trying to enamor by this kind of talk?

Secondly, I happen to have had both cameras, and sold the D600, and kept the D7100 for the purpose I intended the D600 for.

Proof is in the pudding; and for me, the D7100 is plenty for most uses I would have used the D600 for. If I want better in FF terms, the D800 stands out and is not too much of a stretch for a used one, over a new D600.

Not everyones cup of tea granted, but it happens to be his and for what I use it for, mine too.

I am still figuring out exactly how I am going to handle putting all my camera gear in my bag. Looking for some sort of insert for my main backpacking bag. I have a very nice large Gregory Pack however. And all my camping gear is ultra light coming in less than 20 pounds.

Buy a proper camera backpack waterproof All Weather, wear it in the front with your big back on the back while hiking in to base camp, then just carry your camera gear whilst on a photographic trek.

If you have an iPad subscribe to NPhoto monthly magazine & also purchase the Ultimate Nikon SLR Handbook for the iPad, you will find this material a superb reference library, to broaden your skill base and understanding of the Nikon settings.

My opinion, if you are serious and wish to develop this passion as a long term hobby, part time or full time income producing primary / secondary interest right through and into your retirement, then go for the best you can afford. Therefore go for:
D800e, D7100, 14~24, 24~120, 80~400G series Zooms, Carbon Fibre Tripod, good ball head, perhaps a good gimbal head, things like TC's can come later, just remember they loose contrast & resolution over quality primes or zooms.

If you are interested in travelling through Europe and often this is a once every 5 years or more, then this gear will reward you big time. There is no excuse of a tradesman being able to blame his tools for poor photos, just poor workmanship with this selection of quality camera gear.

Purchased the 800 and wished I had gotten the 800e without the anti-pass filter. Tried the 7100 and absolutely love it, except for a buffer that is full too soon. 7100 is 1100 dollars too Can't beat the price, pics are sharp as a tack with i 1.4 tele and using the 1.3 crop factor it provides a major telephoto lens that maintains sharpness.

Me personally, if I am out backpacking for several days - there is no question I am bringing my best gear, especially if I have to put that much effort into getting to locations.

I don't have a huge kit (D700 + Samyang 14mm), so it isn't bad at all.. yet
