p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Anyone bought or used the new Tamron 70-200 2.8 VC?

I know it's only been out for a week and not all places are carrying it yet. Still, I was wondering if anyone has either bought or had a chance to use the new Tamron 70-200 2.8 VC? The Canon version seemed to get some good reviews. I was wondering if the Nikon version was getting similar feedback.

I've been keeping an eye on Roger Cicala's blog at Lensrentals, as I expect him to have some tests pretty soon. Or Photozone. I expect good things.

I had the opportunity to play with it when I picked up my D600 today, so here's a few thoughts:

Pros:

1) AF is smoking fast
2) MFD is better than the Nikon version
3) VR was strong, quick and silent
4) Dug the black finish on the lens

Cons:

1) Price is a little too close to Nikon's version at $1500
2) No focus limiter, which probably isn't a big deal to most

As far the sharpness goes, based on the few pictures I took, sharpness and colors looked excellent zoomed in on the rear LCD at 2.8. Tracking seemed to pretty good on the cars zooming up and down the road or pulling into the parking lot and swerving into parking spaces.

If you're in the market for one, might well be worth a look.

Nikon's is US2,400 and the Tamron will drop in price so that's a US$1,000 difference.

I read a nice report yesterday, he concluded for the price difference he would go for the Tamron unless money was no object. Longer warranty too (though you've got that great deal in the USA on Nikons at the moment, 1+4 isn't it) ?

EDIT. here's the report : http://photo.net/equipment/tamron/70-200vc

For some reason, I thought there was a rebate on the Nikon. But, yes, at $1k difference, the Random is a viable option.

I was looking around my local photo shop (Bob's Camera) and I looked behind the counter and saw that they had two 70-200 VC's in stock. The guy working was one that I have dealt with on a regular basis, and was more than happy to let me play with it (on a D7100).

WOW!!

This lens focuses fast! I played with it, focusing back and forth from frame filling close to far away, and the speed was insane.

I also tested the VC and I am very impressed! On the 17-50 VC I tested a long time ago, it had a noticeable "jump" as the VC activated, which could result in blurry photos.

The 70-200 VC activates very quietly, and I couldn't see any "jump" through the viewfinder. I shot it at around 1/160 at 200mm and it came out SHARP!

With Tamron and Sigma really stepping up their game, Canikon really needs to get their shit together.

My 70-200 purchase will most likely not be from Nikon.

I used it at CP+ in Yokohama back in February and loved it.

The 24-70 and 70-200 will both be my lenses of choice pretty soon.

You should read this report before buying.

I have been looking at this lens (to pair with D800). My main comparisons are this lens with the Nikon F4 version. I may not need the F2.8 all the time, but it may need occasionally. Currently the Nikon F2.8 VRII is out of my budget.

Cmaeralabs review seems to be a copy variation (they tested one copy and it has de-centering issues). I am wondering anyone else tested this lens in detail on Nikon full frame cameras?

Interesting feedback. I recently bought the Nikon 70-200 f/4. I like it, especially the weight of the lens. I may borrow the Tamron version just to compare. I've had the chance to use the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VRII before, so I think I have a good idea of how to compare those as well.

I have loved the Nikon 70-200 f/4 for the portability it offers. It stays in my bag, where I always debated about whether to bring my 80-200 f/2.8, which is lighter than the Tamron 70-200 f/2.8...

How is Nikon 70-200 F4? I am looking for some feedback regarding sharpness and contrast. Someone mentioned 70-200 F4 is equally sharp at F4 comparing the Nikon 70-200F2.8 VR II. It seems a bit of exaggeration as 70-200 F2.8 VR II is already stopped down at 1 stop and 70-200 F4 is wide-open.

I would say, based on some brief testing, that is a pretty accurate statement. It is very sharp wide open and really doesn't get a lot better, IMO.

The f4 is extremely sharp. AF is just a tick slower than the 2.8, but both are very close in many ways aside from the f4 being so much lighter.

Thanks. That means, it is a great alternative to 70-200F2.8 lenses (yes, I understand focusing speed, DOF advantages to 70-200 F2.8 lenses). I am debating myself whether to get the Nikon 70-200F4 or Tamron 70-200 F2.8 VC as both of them are at the same price range. I will not be shooting any sports, but occasional indoor events might come.

I also have 85mm F1.8G and looks like 70-200F4 + 85mm F1.8G will be a good combo.

Thanks. Focusing speed is not my first priority (yes, it is important). However, the sharpness, contrast etc. are the one that I am looking. I am wondering whether I can use for occasional indoor events (with D800). I also have a 85mm F1.8G.

I would think Akshaj, given the high ISO performance of the D800, you would be good to go. The f4 is pretty smooth and very nice. I've always gone by the motto "2.8 can be 4.0, but 4.0 can never be 2.8". That said, I choose the Nikon 2.8 II vs. the 4.0 or the Sigma version. Tamron's wasn't out then but I probably would have considered it.

Thanks.

I also agree the motto "2.8 can be 4.0, but 4.0 can never be 2.8" and hence the confusion. However I do not know whether Tamron 70-200 is sharp enough or worse compared to the Nikon 70-200 versions (both F2.8 VR II and F4). Based on what I read, the Nikon 70-200 F4 is great lens (less weight also). However the extra stop from Tamron is really enticing.

You should have no problems with AF speed in that situation. Like I said, it's just a tick slower. And when I say a tick slower, I mean barely noticeable.
