p.1 #1 · Does anyone use filters anymore?

Just wondering if anyone is still carrying GND/Color filters and using it? Or prefer to do all of this in post processing.

Yes.

I carry a set of ND (2,3,5 stop) and GND (2,3,5) 4x6 filters with a Lee mount. I have a set of step down rings to fit the mount to the four lenses that I normally use.

I also have a 77mm Nikon polarizer that is an essential part of my kit. If there's water, the filter normally gets used.

I have considered one of the variable ND filters, but they are awful expensive given that I already have a pretty good set of gear.

For digital I carry 77mm Circ Polarizer, 3 & 10 stop ND, Singh Ray IR, Gold N Blue & P sized GND filter.

For B&W 4x5 I carry 77mm red & green filters.

If I can capture the look I'm going for in camera, I prefer to do so.

I have a variable ND (I use for video too) a regular ND and a couple polarizers, thinking of getting a GND or two....but not seriously.

Same as most of the above - I occasionally use a polarizer, but mostly use ND filters to slow down motion.

i'm a big fan of GND's. The lee big stopper (or other 10 stop filters) also create some great effects you can't create in post.

Personally (from experience) I would avoid the variable ND filters, hard to get a consistent effect over the whole frame, may work ok on non-wide lenses, I sold mine and stick to my Lee big stopper, also use hard and soft grads.

No, I don't carry my GNDs anymore. CPLs and NDs, but not the grads. I prefer blending now.

We had a chat about this a few months ago.

I still use filters, grads, nd, polariser, along with digital techniques. Nothing is appropriate in every situation.

Not as much as I used to, mostly just a ND for water these days. I used to used ND grads a lot more because of less DR in my older (pre 2005) DSLRs, was never a polariser fan

Never carry color filters - I have more power in post over the things for which I used them in the past.

Never cary GND filters - I have much more power via exposure blending.

Do carry circular polarizers and neutral density filters since both accomplish things that cannot be done in post.

Do search out some of the old threads on this topic since there has been quite a bit of discussion of this in the past, particularly the question of relative advantages/disadvantages of GND filters in the era of digital photography.

My CPL and ND filters get used regularly. However, my GND filters, more often than not, simply sit in my bag. In that case, I probably will correct anything in post processing. However, I really should start utilizing my GND filters more.

I general keep circular polarizers on my lenses.

I still use a 2-stop, soft-edge GND - usually handheld. I have no problem blending exposures, but if I can capture everything in one frame then I am less likely to screw something up on my computer.

Does anyone have a link to exposure blending tutorial for landscapers?

I still use filters and love it, but I truly would like to learn about exposure blending it. I can not seem to be able to do it properly, I will get weird luminance do to a poor selection and stuff... I would really like to see how those that shoot filterless do it..

And I've tried HDR but was never a fan of the haloing..

GND - not any more
Polariser - Yes but don't use very often
ND - Yes, for long exposures

I have not used a color filter ever.

Been 6 years since I used a ND grad, except for super long exposures in a high dynamic range situation.

Still always use a polarizer around water.

I carry one graduated ND (2 stop, I think).

I carry two ND filters (2 stop and 6 stop), since these allow me to do things (e.g., long exposure of rushing water in bright light) I can't do merely with PP.

And I carry a circular polarizing filter, for the same reason.

YMMV

When ever I can I use filters!

Some of my most evocative photos are close to straight out of the camera using filters.
