Wide open, CA really sucks.

I agree, but all fast lenses suffer that problem more or less. Fortunately Lightroom 4 does a great job of cleaning it up without fuzzing the image. I shoot with mine at 1.8 most of the time, and whenever I have reflective metal in the frame with noticeable LoCA I just take it out with the color fringing sliders or interactive defringe tool.

Here's a blog entry at Adobe on that feature: http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2012/04/new-color-fringe-correction-controls.html

Thanks.

I'm using LR3. Any advice?

Hi,

Can you do a free upgrade to LR3.6? It has some adjustments in develop mode (Manual) for CA and defringing.

So few subjects actually have that shade of magenta, you can often just desaturate it with no harm to the image.

I have LR3.6. Manual defringe doesn't totally fix the problem. Photoshop gets me most of the way there.

This is one of the classic bargain lenses Canon come up with now and again....I use it in a studio environment and it is as good as it gets in my opinion...I have to go MF to get better. Use it for its strength...or learn to minimize its weaker points!

Upgrade to LR4. It is only $80 or so, and provides a host of benefits. The only watch-out is that it does not run under Windows XP.

It does a much better job removing color fringing than does LR3, as the link provided above by wsheldon shows.

Seriously time to think about an upgrade there too then.

No way to upgrade without a fresh install and then reinstalling everything.

*Major* PITA to do that.

Was considering upgrading to Vista and then to Win7 but that is going to be a lot of work.

The problem may be worse on the Apple side. You not only have to upgrade the OS, you have to discard all the software that the new more-bit-depth OS can't run. Buy a lot of it again from scratch or forget about it, together with the documents you created with those programs. And you can't get a plug-in for 5D III output to run in Lightroom 3, even though they have a plug-in that lets legacy Photoshop process the files. So your choice is, you can quit using Lightroom and go back to Photoshop and Bridge, and keep using you computer as is, or revolutionize your computer, your programs, etc., and use Lightroom 4 with your 5D III. It's a pain in the butt.

A little scare mongering there I think.... I'm still running lots of the old 32 bit software written for OSX many versions ago, but I'm now on 10.8.3. Not only that - but if you do a clean install and want the latest updates, Apple don't make you do a small update, have to reboot, then another small update and reboot 20 times like last time I had to reinstall XP!

Windows 7 & 8 are well worth the trouble to update from XP unless there is something specific you know won't run, and even then run XP in a virtual machine if it was something really life critical.

Since Canon has been updating its primes, I would easily be willing to spend $799-$899 for an updated EF 85 1.8 USM with IS, new coatings, etc.
