Terry, what an amazing, beautiful bit of gardener's paradise you must have created. Stunning is each image, your floral caring/design/nourishing skills shine through brilliantly. I'm really loving you shots. As a former architect your garden work is inspiring, humbling to say the least, well arranged, grown and captured. Thank you for sharing your magic...WoW

Seems I've some weeding to do...now where are my gloves

Great contributions all.

I've been only an observer so far, but I'll keep this thread going. Here are some from our local Descanso Gardens in SoCal, courtesy of the 5DIII:

Lottsa blackbird activity every spring. Not the best shots here, but they will have to do for now until I get a chance to dedicate some time to blackbirds.

Doctorbird, you make me wish I could visit Descanso Gardens. I especially like the first two shots, solo subjects within large groups.

Peter, nice light on the RWBs, and of course perfect exposure to bring out the glistening feathers while retaining the blackness.

Most of my flower shots so far this spring have been done with the 100L, and a few with 70-200 + extension tubes. I got in early enough this afternoon to catch some good light on the irises, and decided to use the longest FL I have to separate some flowers from their distracting backgrounds. 300/2.8 II + 2X III. I shot hand-held in shutter priority with auto ISO, as a way to quickly deal with changing light and slight breeze.

An 85/1.2 can give ultra shallow DOF on the subject, but even at f/5.6 or 6.3, 600 mm does better at turning a detailed background into a wash of color. Now, if I put the combo on a tripod and had a totally wind-free day, I could do some focus stacking...

A perfect setup for this, from my brother many years ago: "If we had some bacon, we could have bacon and eggs... if we had some eggs."

Took the dog for a walk after work.

Hells Half Acre is a few miles west of town. It's a lava cap, that holds good spring flowers, similar to Table Mountain, near Oroville, CA. The lupines were out, and some small 'meadow-foam' like white flowers.

A beautiful walk and some beautiful results! Did you have both the 6D and 7D, or was one shot from a different trip?

I hope we can't have too many flowers in this thread! The plain old 100L, daylight through a window, about a half hour ago. Nine shot focus stack.

Out on the bikes today, but not much flora to be seen here yet - just a few straggly-looking dandelions trying to break out from the mud. Junior took bread for the fauna, and i took my 5D with Samyang 85mm f/1.4 to test out my focus screen re-shimming.

"Beware of children bearing bread" or "Hey come back, i'm trying to feed you!":

Nice job with the MF; you must have gotten the shimming right. Nice shot too - good timing, "placement" of elements, and light.

Very often unexpected opportunities present themselves in an imperfect guise.....however, one can only work with what is given.

Another stab at using long FL for close-ups. I got the 300/2.8 primarily for sports and the 2X III primarily for occasional attempts at wildlife. 600 mm has other uses, though. Hand held, no pretense of ultimate sharpness, more of an "artsy-fartsy" style. I can't compete with Peter's ducks, so I have to find another way to keep the thread going.

Oh, and the exif is misleading - I blended two exposures to get the tonality in the "centerpiece", and that exposure is the one that metered +4.3 and ISO 51,200. The main exposure was 3200, so don't be impressed by the low noise (though it's quite decent for that speed).

Ah, the camouflaged northern tree pigeon. Certainly you'd want to spend a half hour in Photoshop removing all the twigs and twiglets? After all, with your track record, you may only have another seventeen such opportunities in the remaining weeks of spring, right? No, seriously, well done. It's a bit of the natural environment, much like showing some of the surroundings when shooting water fowl, rather than always framing as tightly as possible.
