Jerry, great job on the Maple seeds (they look a lot like Sycamore seeds to me, i guess the two are related). I'm a sucker for backlighting myself. I'm not sure the very small aperture gains so much in these shots, but its it's nice to know you have the headroom to shoot at astronomical ISO's and tiny apertures for when you need it.

You're right, of course, 15Bit; any extra DOF gained by the small aperture (and that was negligible at best) was obscured by the high noise reduction from dealing with the astronomical ISO's...well, experimentation is cheap in today's photography, and the only thing used up is...the light, and it was overcast at sunset today !

I walked in the woods this morning; spring wild flowers on the forest floor are reaching a peak before the trees leaf out...I saw my first wild iris, and thought of Terry (tbartik) and her stacked bearded irises...the small iris is not a focus-stack, but the white trillium and the trailing trillium are, both with Helicon Focus software. I've got lots of room for improvement working with it, but I can see the potential there...

All were made with the 100L Macro, tripod, remote, 10x live-view focus, etc....

Peter-the red on that bird...very nice. Not so nice shooting a cat...

Here is one from my Iris Garden shot this morning.

Terry

Terry, that is a magnificent iris shot. A real piece of poetry.
As far as shooting the cat is concerned, that was just fiction....a message to our friend Jefferson and his bird hunting cat.

Jerry-Very nice stacking! Love the contrast you put out. Maybe I should look into software...I have been just using ACR-CS6-save? I do have to take a lot of stacks though...any wind..breeze I am done. My Iris are the tall bearded, makes extra hard with movement.

He is one from this afternoon....

5DIII 85-1.8-tube....6 photos.

Ingredients:
• One 5 to 6 pound duck
• 8 cups water
• 1 slice ginger
• 1 scallion, cut into halves
• 3 tablespoons honey
• 1 tablespoon white vinegar
• 1 tablespoon sherry
• 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch, dissolved in 3 tablespoons water
• Scallions for garnish
Preparation:
Clean duck. Wipe dry and tie string around neck.
Hang duck in cool, windy place 4 hours.
Fill large wok with water. Bring to boil. Add ginger, scallion, honey, vinegar, and sherry. Bring to boil. Pour in dissolved cornstarch. Stir constantly.
Place duck in large strainer above larger bowl. Scoop boiling mixture all over duck for about 10 minutes.
Hang duck again in cool, windy place for 6 hours until thoroughly dry.
Place duck breast side up on a greased rack in oven preheated to 350 degrees. Set a pan filled with 2 inches of water in bottom of oven.
(This is for drippings). Roast 30 minutes.
Turn duck and roast 30 minutes more. Turn breast side up again. Roast 10 minutes more.
Use sharp knife to cut off crispy skin. Serve meat and skin immediately on a prewarmed dish.
The duck is eaten hot with hoisin sauce rolled in Mandarin Crepes. Garnish with scallion flowerets. Serves 4 to 6.

I'm afraid Peter is "shooting" with the wrong equipment for that Jefferson

Owning a robust and fluids-sealed Pro grade body, he could of course exercise his l33t ninja skillz, creep up on the critters and club them to death with his 1Dx. On the end if a 600mm it should make a decent mace

A pijun for PetKal.

OK, it's a crappy photo but this pijun is significant. It was possibly the last free pijun in Shanghai before they were culled/captured/vaccinated for the H7N9 bird flu epidemic. Besides, they were skittish of foreigners.

Jefferson, would you like to know about the time honoured tradition of making high quality violin, guitar and tennis racquet strings from cat gut ?

Violin strings were actually made from sheep intestines, in spite of the so-called Cat Gut Acoustical Society.
Now the cores are generally synthetic. "No animals were harmed in the stringing of this fine old Italian instrument."

Yeah, but you guys are hardy types. If your women are generally as stout as that girl in your picture, then it is easy to imagine how stout your men must be.

I don't know.....we live in a society of cat worshipers.....thus the truth must not be made public.

Logic tells me that peter is right here - cats sound very much like a violin when they sing, ergo violin strings are most likely made from cat. The logic is indisputable

Just got back from our annual Spring CPS toy day at a wildlife reserve. All the Canon latest and greatest to play with, but I spent most of my time messing around with my own 5D3+100-400L+2xTCIII. Sorry dear Petpijunmeister, I let the side down, but dayum I'm fascinated with the 1.4x and 2xTCIIIs. Here is some cheap 800mm.

PS: There was no baiting or animal harmed. He caught and smashed that fish himself
