p.1 #1 · White Puff Colour or BW? (3rd edit added)

Found this image in the archives and decided to process it. I am on the fence which I like better.

Thoughts?

**UPDATE**

Here is a new edit based on various input. I did bring a tiny bit of detail out of the shadows but any more and the image start to fall apart for me. I also brought out more texture/detail out of the highlights and gave the image a slightly cold colour cast.

Nice shot and close call either way. I would give the nod to the color, in part because of the gold flecks on the near rock and the pink sky.

But there's nothing wrong with the BW shot either.

Thanks for sharing.

Geez - I don't know either Scott. I think I'm leaning towards B&W. The color one is a nice demonstration that subtle color can be good, but I still think I like the B&W better. The browns in the water and ice just don't do it for me I think.

Can I make a third suggestion? Maybe try some tones on the B&W version? I think a cold or warm tone (subtle) might work well and actually a split tone going cold on the highlights and warm on the shadows might be excellent. I'd do it myself, but I figure it is rude to tinker with someone's photo without asking...

Wow Scott... man... I think we will all just need to flip coins on these two... I seriously can't really pick between them. I think they both are fantastic, so no matter which one you wanted to use, you can't go wrong... This is a really cool shot to have found in the archives.

Scott,

I like the BW. I think the colored version doesn't have much color anyways and it's pretty much leaning on going BW :P. Love the composition and slow shutter work on the water.

Scott,
Hard to pick in this one...i'd go with color..for the reason Dave stated..the gold specs in the front..and that hint of yellow shrub on top of the waterfall.

After some thought, I lean, ever so slightly, towards the color version. My initial reaction was to go for the black and white. I can see your indecision!

Really like your composition (as usual) but Im not loving the tonality of this image. Its missing a bit of mid tones to my liking.

B&W is the way to go on this one. In color it looks dirty. I would also try a "cold" B&W with some blue in it.

I'll take the color, looks natural. Just like I'd see it. The B&W is fine, but just doesn't have the normal B&W wow going. I think it's the blur in the water throw off the image, or as someone said, maybe a different filter.

Both are excellent images, regardless.

As much as I love B&W and this one is a beauty, I find the colour of the water in the falls to be so unusual along with the pink sky to be enough to give the colour version the edge, but thats only my humble opinion

Cheers Ray

Well, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be any more decisive than most. But I do have a suggestion for something the might tip the scales. I have found that in the few times I have converted a snow scene to B&W, that I want to add a little more contrast just to the snow, so that it has slightly more pronounced texture than the color version. Without that I think the B&W snow looks too white and featureless. I don't know, but you might find that if you select the just the snow and apply a gentle curve with greater steepness at the highlight end, it make the B&W stand out as preferable. You don't want to darken it so much as create a little more separation between the subtle highlight tones.

Otherwise I'd probably go with the color, but not with great certainty!
