p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 1DSmk3 vs. 5Dmk3 question

Question for those of you who have used both 1Ds mk3 body and 5d mk3. I'm currently shooting Nikon and plan to remain there for the most part, but have invested in a Canon 17mm TS-E since Nikon does not offer one yet. However I'm torn between 5d mk3 body and an older 1ds mk3. In general I prefer the pro bodies and the prices on the 1ds3 are very reasonable. Most of what I shoot is architectural and commercial, so the AF system is not much of a concern for me, nor is low light capability. From what I gather, those are the big advantages to the 5dmk3. But maybe there is something I'm not considering. For those who have used both, is there any noticeable difference in overall IQ? Dynamic range? Or any downside to the older body?

Thanks in advance!

Having owned the 1Ds3 and now owning the 5D3, unless you need the weather sealing of the 1 series or the better battery life, I really can't see why you would buy one. The 5D3 is better is almost every other way and a warranty together with cps service would be the pro choice in my book.

If you are going to be using liveview the 5D3 has a vastly better screen and more modern liveview implementation

In short the 1Ds3 is a great oldish 1-series, the 5D3 is a fantastic, modern non 1-series.

True.. I had not thought about liveview. Not something I use frequently, but still good to consider. Thanks

The 5D3 is a great body, and maybe good for him. But it's not at all better in almost every other way. Here are a few things that the 1Ds3 is better at.

Better viewfinder (larger)
You have ten different focus screens for it
Shutter lag
Viewfinder blackout (a lot better)
Shutter last twice as long (probably)

Thanks Lars. These are the things that are good to hear since I've been away from Canon quite a while now. Even with my Nikons, I love the ultimate image quality of D800 but still like the viewfinder, speed, handling of D3 series. Good thing I guess is you can't really go wrong either way.

You are buying a Canon primarily because you have the 17mm t/s lens and you won't be using liveview? Hmm.

What Lars & Bacalhau said. +
If you don't need expanded ISO and video I would never choose a 5d3 over a 1Ds3. The old girl still has files that just KILL...

Probably as you say, given that it will be used...

You are badass if you are NOT using LV with a TSE lens!

In fact I would consider a 6D even if you are just shooting what you say, as using an IPad for a monitor would be very nice in the field. Of course one can do this with the 5d3 wired also (or camranger). Unsure if it is possible to do any of this with 1ds3?

I prefer using a SmallHD DP6 monitor with my TS lenses.

It should work equally well on a 1DsIII or 5DIII.

I've never used Liveview with my Nikons and 24ts-e, but as the eyes get older I may start utilizing that more, and I like the idea of DP6 monitor. I've had very good results by bubble-leveling camera, shifting to desired composition, and shooting. With the 17 though, that might require a larger view. Appreciate all your thoughts gentlemen.

Coming from large format film I find live view and the magnificent new LCD's make using specialist lenses much easier and of course the 5D3 hs an accurate built-in two way level.

Much as I love my 1Ds3 the 5D3 image quality in RAW is every bit as good, if not better at all ISO's, plus it's cheaper and has a warranty. No contest IMHO.

5D3 unless you'll be shooting in a war zone. Seriously, I loved the 1Ds3, but there's nothing that it does better than the 5D3 except built quality and battery life. For TSE work you will be relying heavily on the screen and that alone is a huge difference.

Think I'm leaning toward picking up a couple 5d 3's based on what I've seen in person and heard here. I could always add a 1ds mk3 later if I felt it necessary. The tempting thing there is they are only about 2k on the used market. But I think keeping current would be a good plan.

If you are on a budget I would consider the 6D or even an used 5D2.

Love the 1ds3. Future classic 1ds camera no doubt. Having said that, in true image quality performance, even the old 5d2 gives it a run for its money and at some areas like high ISO out paces it. Since you are shooting static object, it is unlikely that you will even make use of the robust 1ds3 AF let alone the 61-point reticular AF in the 5d3. Therefore I suggest you to take a look at 5d2 or a 6d.

Like other said as an overall complete camera package, the 5d3 is very good. It decimates the 1ds3's market values for goodness sakes.
