Been away for a while due to our long 5 1/2 week sojourn in New Zealand. Here are a few of the first shots I have to be processed (I started with 5,000 bird shots and have culled that down to about 1,500 so still a long way to go) !

Takahe - not more than 200 remain. Flightless bird. Mother feeding her solitary chick.

Bellbird - usually only found in a few special native NZ bush parks (though starting to break out into areas close by). Has the most gorgeous, and wide ranging, vocalisation.

Royal (Southern) Albatross

Great shots, love the bellbird especially. They are beautiful birds with such a lovely song. Your other shots are also really good.

> aladyforty, the purple swamp hen is probably closer to the pukeko rather than the Takahe, slimmer and more upright. I'm not sure if they are the same bird (PSH and Pukeko) or just both subspecies of the swamphen but the Takahe is a different species (but related).

Good looking set of images Kevin. The bellbird is my fave too, but the Takahe is a cool looking (although heavyset) bird. Well done.

love all the albies in nz. i took a boat trip from kaikoura and it was fantastic! i didn't see bellbird; your shot is really nice though. you could even loosen the crop a bit on him and it would be just as effective.

Great rarities. When you're the last few standing it seems you earn a leg band!! Very unique looking birds though. Love the albatross. Don

Thanks aladyforty ! Actually the Purple Swamp Hen is called the Pokeko in NZ and although they look similar the Takahe is 3-4 times heavier and is flightless. The Pokeko can of course fly very well and is quite a common bird. That ability to fly probably being what has saved it from a fate similar to that of the Takahe.

Thanks Ken, I'm pleased you like them ! The Takahe is indeed a heavy set bird - one of the first questions my (Chinese) wife asked when she saw them for the first time was ... can you eat them, they look like chickens
