p.1 #1 · Factory Butte at Sunrise and Moonset

First time photography this iconic location east of Torrey Utah. Very much fun arriving before dawn and not knowing what to expect. We were not disappointed and actually shot here on two mornings.

my first impression was that the image could benefit with more contrast. but I'm not sure that is true. maybe just in the big mound to give more detail? I like the composition.
regards, tom

I agree with Tom's first impression- and I'm sticking with it .
I also like the basic image, and the only question is how the photographer chooses to process it.
East of Torrey? Also east of Capitol Reef National Park?

Ok Tom and Charlie, I will work on contrast of the "big mound", which is actually Factory BUTTE!!

Yes, Mike. I like your edit better.
But I'm a true contrast freak, and would like more like the following:
(Forget about the moon for now- it could have been saved better than I did.)
Charlie

Okay- the butte is a bit too harsh for me, but the dried mud is about the way I'd prefer.

Sorry Charlie

Too much contrast for my taste. Sky too bright. Maybe something half way between yours and mine!

best

much better - the butte certainly looks better. like you, I think Charlie's is a bit much, although I like his mud (!!). nice work in general.

I agree Mike.
Plus- it's your image, and that makes your opinion right .
I did warn about my being freakish
And now, one more edit and then I'll take my afternoon nap .
Charlie

Hmmm pretty close to your edit

I will go against the grain here, I like the first one, it has good detail in the foreground and lovely soft tones in the sky

Cheers Ray

I'm with you Ray - the image was taken in low light at or just after moon rise. At that time there is very little contrast. IMHO the detail in the foreground makes the image - wouldn't change a thing.

Ray

I am with you on this the more I think about it. I was there and this is an accurate and I also think soft rendition of early morning light.

I can see some advantage of the high contrast version and if the shot had been make midday, yep there would be more contrast.

Thanks for sticking up for my first version!

I know this place well - a great sunrise location.

You did a good job of portraying the stillness and loneliness!
