I did handheld the new 120-300mm OS at Photokina last year and it is pretty heavy lens. It is advisable to use a tripod or monopod as further support for long period of shooting in the field

Nah, it's no worse than handholding the 200 f2/300 f2.8 all day The 400 f2.8's a much different story.

What is that you are talking about here ? Nikon 400 f/2.8 or Canon 400 f.2.8 IS MkII ?
Because you might have "felt" the former, but how would you know about the latter ? They are very different. Just sayin', in order that your inapplicable Nikon wisdom doesn't confuse us here.

I sort of agree upto a point.
Yes it was a shock wheni first used it . But I've had a couple of good sessions with it since and as long as its not constantly held in a shooting position its been fine . By that I mean walking about just carrying it and then shooting .
I will say that I am definitely taking some sort of support with me to a the 6hr WEC sportscar race because I can't see me holding it constantly to my eye without support .

Will , the weight is much the same I agree but its longer than a 200/2 or 300/2.8 so likely feels a bit heavier

According to Sigma, the new "Sports line" model weights 7.5 pounds..Which is about the same as the Canon 500mm f/4L IS II + 1.4x III extender.

I have been closely following this lens and waiting for it to be released; anxious to hear the early reviews. Every time I looked for info on weight I could not find anything. When I saw the above post, I was very disappointed in the weight. Curious, I went looking for more info. The only thing I could find was this link:

http://www.sigmaphoto.com/lenses/viewall?items_per_page=All

The wierd thing is if you click on the lens only, the weight line is empty, BUT if you click on its Compare button and that of the 300 2.8 right next to it, then click 'Click to compare', the weight of the 120-300 is shown as 3.5lbs. The link indicates this is the new 120-300, as the collar handle style would also indicate. As much as I am disappointed in the 7.5lbs indicated above, I am surprised and somewhat skeptical of the 3.5lbs indicated here.

I'm hoping Fred or somebody else can help unravel this confusion. Anybody have a direct line into Sigma?!

When I handled the lens at a show I commented that it very heavy for is size. I was basing this on my experience of the 500 ii. The Sigma reps said it weighs 2.9kgs (6.38lbs). Not sure if that's concrete, but it certainly felt (almost) as heavy as the big white.

Should we be concerned that the word "concrete" was used in your answer? Exactly how much concrete?

It felt like it had enough concrete inside! It is (to me) surprising how heavy it is. I know there must be a lot of internals, for zooming, and glass inside, but it weighs almost as much as the 500 ii.

Cancel those hopes right now Mister From the RAW files I got last month it's in the ballpark of the 70-200 ii, but definitely not going to compete with the big white prime.

It actually weighs more than the Nikon 200-400. B&H specs list the Nikon at 7.4lbs. This thing is indeed a boat anchor!

Well if 1oz turns it intros 'boat anchor' then fine .

Sigma list the weight of the new lens at 119.6oz and the Nikon 200-400 is listed @118.6oz

By the way as previously stated the current one is just less than 3kg (TDP list it as an 'in use' weight of 108.7oz)

Lets face it , a to 300mm 2.8 zoom lens is not going to be a featherweight is it . But when you consider the alternatives are all costing a hell of alot more $$ then its niche that sigma have to themselves

Fine by me. I don't see anyone complaining about the IQ of the 70-200 II.

Especially with t/c. On the existing version has anyone seen a comparison of how this lens fares with the sigma t/c versus the canon mark III?
