I like the channel of water that snakes its way out towards the horizon. You got some nice reflections in it in the foreground. The timing of this photo makes me wonder what happened next...when the sun dropped down a little more, did the clouds light up with color, or was the marine layer just too thick for that? Also, what is causing the very bright spots on the rocks, especially the closer ones? Maybe it's just me, but they look unnaturally bright.

Hi Jonathan,

This is a wonderful composition, you have some really sweet lines in this. I think Phrasikleia hit on something though, the rocks feel too bright, even the horizon by the sun is a bit too bright, I know the sun is poking right through there, but the area around it should be a stop darker or so. Try pulling down the highlights in the whole shot a bit more and I am thinking this shot will really stand out, it has the makings of a super shot.

Hi Phrasikleia
The original shot was over exposure by 3 1/2 plus stop as see photo below.
Thanks to LightRoom4 I was able to saved this shot.

Jonathan,
I am amazed that you got ANYTHING from the overexposed pic.
But what you got is quite good- especially (as mentioned) the perspective and composition.
I fiddled some with it. Don't know if my edit is an improvement or not. Mostly just some basic brightness lowering, contrast raising, a little saturation, and sharpening.
I'll put it up here for comparison.
Charlie

Jonathon... I am sure you might really be realizing this now... but the Histogram is your friend... spend time with your friend... lot's of time... every few shots... especially at sunset or sunrise where the light changes so fast... and especially after changing compositions or locations...

But I do have to say, it's amazing to see just how much LR4, well adobe was able to pull out of that shot... really amazing.

That's a crazy amount of recovery.
I like the composition. I bet the colors would be quite dramatic after the sun dropped below the horizon.
