p.1 #1 · Kalaluau detail

Hello,

Here are two related compositions shot from the Kalaluau Overlook in Kokee State Park, Kauai.

The weather was alternating fog and drizzle with weak sunshine. The tree is at least a mile away. This was shot with a Canon 5Dii @ F11 with a 100-400 Zoom set to ~ Focal length 335. 1/80 sec at ISO 100, on a Feisol 3442 tripod.

Comments and criticism welcome.
Which do you like better/worse and why?

1. In the sunshine, sorta

2. In the fog and mist

I found it easier to PS my thoughts than to describe them. This is how I would have framed and processed the shot.

Helencia,

I appreciate your taking the time to give me this feedback. Can you tell me what you
are trying to accomplish? Do you feel I should de-emphasize the tree?

Mike,

I also appreciate your feedback, even if I am not sure I understand it.
Should I assume that mud in your sock means disapproval?

I love the abstract nature of your first shot. Unlike Helenica, I prefer your composition over what was proposed.

Nma: Neither picture works for me in composition.

The first 1 its not clear whether the subject is the tree or the environment and for me it looks static because the tree is in the center. Because the tree is centred and small.

The 2nd 1 does a bettter job making the tree bigger (the subject) but it is centred and a little static and does not have the interests of the first. Maybe if the tree was more dominant in the picture and less centred.

I think the first view with the tree on the left nearly filling the frame vertically and the texture of the changing land behind it would be a better composition of this picture, would be less static and minimize all the competing elements, but use the contrasts.

Just my view.

Scott
