Which do you prefer and why?

Or, perhaps a bit added to the lower edge?

For me I prefer the 1st image, with the trees on the lower left side of the image. The trees serve to balance the image and help keep my eye moving around the image. My eye moves from the trees, up to the clouds and back down to the boat.

+1 @ Barbara.

Also, the lines in the water reflections are horizontally contrasting, while the expanse of bright sky pulls us vertically too far from anything, and with too much mass for us to easily come back down. The motion of the ship is anticipated to be horizontally moving into the cove/bay area. Having the bright expanse of sky pulling us up is somewhat incongruous the other horizontal cues, and in the cropped versions renders the ship more implied static than implied motion.

Alternate crop

They tell different stories. Which one to pick depends on the story that is important for you to tell.

The third one with the added light band at the bottom doesn't work for me though. It's a distraction since there isn't any other part of the water that is a similar tone or brightness, so it looks out of place. I suppose you could say that it's mirroring the sky in the top of the frame, but I wouldn't.

If I had to make a choice, I'd pick the second one, but I'm a sucker for that type of composition.

C&C from an untrained eye, but love the first one. Great balance.

first one grounds the subject. Gives perspective of the ship off in the distance.
