p.1 #1 · Security researchers hacking WFT protocols and gigabit on 1Dx

Interesting if you're into computers. Not so interesting if you're not.

The long and the short of it is that it's not very secure for a variety of reasons, and a determined hacker may be able to sniff out the configuration of a camera and download every image on the camera, and possibly upload images or take over the camera.

Fun stuff.

Paranoia, just turn it off. It drains the battery anyways.

The wi-fi is a nice feature, and has some possible applications. But I'm not sure how many serious photographers will use it to begin with.

Wi-fi has never been 'that secure'.

I know some PJ's use it at events, or maybe I'm mistaking it for something else. They have those WFT and send them back to a computer to someone in the press box who is sending the images to whomever.

I think that those gymnastics photographers do it too.

I use the Gig Ethernet jack on my 1DX almost daily, beats handling the cards by a wide margin. Wi-Fi is used by many, but it is not designed for anything but ease of use.

I never use the wired connectivity on an open network, only on mine or a client's. It is incredibly useful to stream and not deal with the intermediate steps of cards and little doors and pins, etc.

Safe to say there aren't many protocols, if any, which cannot be breached.

I'm sure its possible, but a hacker can not take over your camera and run up a phone bill, or drain your bank account like they can with a phone.

Certainly, its easy to secure network communications, but if you use wireless in a insecure setting, it could be a issue. I'd not lose any sleep over it, its pretty unlikely to happen to me.
