p.3 #1 · Crazy megapixels "for weddings"....????

Same here. I'm actually surprised more clients DON'T inquire, what with all the marketing aimed toward consumers touting "megapixels" as the main selling point of cameras. Prospective clients aren't calling me up and asking, "How many megapixels?" They don't even ask, "What brand?"

I would imagine that provokes more inquiry! I've seen lots of people eye my camera, clearly checking out the model name or lens, and never ask me anything about it. That happens far more to me than people actually ask. The only thing I get asked about regularly is my flash, 'why is it backwards?', 'what's that black thing?' (snoot), etc.

I've switched to the d600 and I think 24mp is crazy for weddings but the camera has enough benefits to live with it. 36mp was too many for me. I need the quietest camera I can get and the d600 is pretty amazing in that regard.

D600 more quiet than D3S quiet mode?

It isn't even close. I shoot from under the chuppah at Jewish weddings. At the last one (the first with the d600) my wife yelled at me afte the ceremony for not shooting anything. She couldn't hear the shots and figured I just wasn't shooting. I never got yelled at with the D3S.

Seriously, that "amateur" body has an enormous benefit of having that quietest shutter I've ever heard on a DSLR.

I've never had a client ask me about megapixels, though I'm sure that day is coming. Ultimately it's not about fewer or more MPs, or noise, or dynamic range, or whatever other IQ spec you want to conjure up. Make sure you and your camera can capture great moments, and the rest vanishes in comparison.

You would think so but that hasn't been my experience over the past few years that I've been all taped up. I suppose people are curious but they don't come right out and ask, "Hey, what kind of camera is that?" They keep their curiosity to themselves. Even groomsmen, being young guys who sometimes have an interest in camera gear, never ask.

I've seen people say they used to shoot whole weddings at 3 megapixels in the mid-2000s and the images turned out great.

2.7 megapixels:

I think it was Gary Fong that once said anything above 3 megapixels for creating wedding albums is overkill.

I just picked one of those up! Never used one before. So now I have to expect to be asked about it?

Though sometimes I have wondered if people think I'm taped up because I'm embarrassed about what equipment I use.

Who has an IPhone 5 what was wrong with the first one, why did you upgrade ?

If only sensors where interchangeable, DR and Colour improves with tech, cameras do wear out.
The D800 would have been nice in the 16-24 mp range, Nikon users had little choice before D600 came out, that or a D4 $$. DNG and output file size make it a none issue for me.

I shot with one of those back in the day.

I actually used to photograph football with it... not good.

Great colours though!

Last wedding me and my brother shot over 7000 frames... Our personal best
Had to buy another external drive for back-ups. Couldn't even imagine having d800. As soon as I heard how many MP it will have, I knew it is not for wedding work. Just NO WAY. But on the other hand- if it works for somebody...

Eh, it doesn't matter to me. I shoot with 2 5D3s so if anything people nod approvingly or have no idea what I just said.

I know, right? What the hell is that about. That would be 200 rolls of film.

It's funny, now that megapixels are getting higher, I'm using them less.

The 5d II/III I use are 20 something megapixels, but I shoot them at ~5 and 9.

Feel sorry for whoever has to cull 7000 shots.
