p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · My Second Engagement Shoot - with more motorcycles!

UPDATED - see revised photos in post #10 below. Original [poorly processed] photos can be found here: Preliminary Gallery

A friend of mine is a Regional Sales Manager for KTM motorcycles, and he asked me recently if I would take engagement photos. Apparently he'd seen the engagement session I did last year (Clint & Chanel), and thought it would be cool to get some shots with the bikes. I was honored to be asked, so we set it up. Little did we know what Mother Nature had in store for the weekend we chose.

It was 70 degrees here a couple of weeks ago, but not this weekend! Friday night we got together for some evening shots, and it was in the upper 30′s with a 20 MPH wind, even some snow flurries about. I’d picked out several outdoor locations around downtown Boise that we thought would be fun, but with the weather being so nasty, we had to improvise a bit. We decided to duck into the State Capitol building – mostly to warm up, but also to try out a few shots inside.

The clouds broke up a bit right around sunset, so despite the bitter cold we ventured outside to get some shots with the pretty evening sky as a backdrop. We had to work quickly, my models were pretty cold and I didn't want it to show in the photos that way too much!

On Saturday, the weather was slightly warmer, with less wind at least. Time to get out the bikes!

All in all, a couple of really fun sessions with a great couple. C&C welcome, I'm always trying to learn and grow.

Nice set although if I was the photographer, the set requires some panning shots.

What is going on with the noise on her face in #5!?

Further on through the set it varies from over smoothed to over noisy.

#23 her skin has an unhealthy yellow pallor

That may be harsh, but I am only willing to be that harsh because the set is incredibly good for a second go at it.

I would love to have done some, and asked them if they wanted to, but they declined.

These were all pretty quick edits, I'm waiting for them to make final selections before doing the final retouching. I get impatient wanting to post them sometimes before completing the editing process, which I shouldn't do. I'll fix WB on #23, thanks!

I"m just not a huge fan of the skintones and noise and some shots. I like the poses and the settings etc. Maybe its just me.

I think your post processing is a little odd. Some halos here and there. Maybe too much sharpening or maybe your over correcting exposures, a bit? Good ideas, over all, but I think a little refinement would be in order to get your shots and your post to work a little better together. For a second outing, it is very good. 4,9,10 are very nice.

All great ideas but could use some refinement. I think people already mentioned the post processing so I won't bother with that.

1 - Couple gets lost in the image. Try using OCF to light them up or back light them to make them pop. Or micro compose them.

2 - Move her close to him to get so she's in the frame of the door window.

3 - I'm not a fan of seeing the back of people's heads. I think this image would be stronger if you could see their profiles. Same with 22.

4 - well done

6 - Silhouettes rock but if you are going to do them, make sure you work in strong posing and they clearly pop. Move away from the buildings behind them. Have them create more negative space and flattering posing. Ask her to arch her back and clearly definite that she has two legs and arms.

10 - Have them move closer to the railing/you so they pop more.

11 - Good idea but does the building have any relevance?

14 + 21 - The bike overpowers this image a little much for me. 15 is a better use of the bike.

17 - good.

18 - Good but I don't like the groom smushing his face.

Overall.. great for a 2nd time. Lots of good ideas!

Thanks for the feedback. Lessons learned for sure!

1. Be patient.
2. Finish your photos before posting.
3. Don't get overly dependent on plug-in presets.
4. Be careful of skin tones and textures when processing or enhancing photos which include people.
