p.1 #1 · Possible reason the 200-400/4 1.4x is delayed

Canon made a mistake and discovered that for the price they are targeting the 200-400/4 1.4x will not sell in sufficient volume.

You gotta wonder why it is taking them so dang long to ship that long lens.

Not that I am interested.

Hopefully, for a retool to make it lighter. That'd make it more appealing. No reason for a 400 F4 to be so weighty.

Unless they can add another 100mm.

I know there are conflicting price estimates on the net and from Canon reps. One told me last month it would be well north of the 600 ii price and another earlier this month at a trade show told me it would be close to the 500 ii price. I guess we just have to wait/see

The delay is annoying though, because I want to buy a super tele and I consider the 200-400 a viable option if the price is right.

I still think Canon is in this for pure bragging rights of a unique design and doesn't care about recovering development costs. Also, sales volume for this lens is going to be extremely limited anyways. The people and organizations in the market for 5 figure lenses are not going to care about a few extra thousand dollars of added cost. If it's going to give them a better chance to get "the shot" it is worth it.

Will be interesting to see what Canon does with the 100-400. The 70-300 already occupies it's price slot so they have the gap to move the 100-400 into the $3000-$3500 range with newer IS and better optics.

Well canon have lost one sale .

I was prepared to sell a couple of my kids to fund this 'unicorn' lens . Problem is they will be all grown up by the time its available and not worth as much

I suspect the problem is the same one that has slowed delivery of the 500mm and 600mm: the shortage of fluorite because of extreme weather in India last year. You can't rush Mother Nature.

My gut feel tells me they had to go back to the drawing board with the lens......some operational aspects of it might have received unfavourable feedback from the Olympics photographers. Could be the weight, and perhaps a few other issues. In the extreme case, Canon might have put the whole project on ice until some undetermined future time.

One way or another, a purchase of that lens would be extremely hard to justify. The only reason for getting it would be not to let Roland ("Netexpress") own more long lenses than I do. However, that is a pretty shaky reason.

Maybe, but you'd still do it. Right?

What is the possible reason for this thread

Of course PetKal will buy one. How else will he be able to give a review of it along with PIF shots?

Markle, you seem to think that testing gears' AF on live mice baited owls would be more challenging and meaningful ?

Maybe the "1.4" part degrades IQ to a point where Canon won't let it out...maybe just a plain 200-400 f/4...or 400 f/4L IS with a decent MFD (25ft./7.62m) would be a better lens...but then I'm biased towards primes...

I wouldn't know, since I have never tried that. How about ducks and gulls then?

That wouldn't be "decent", that would be terribly bad, even worse than in 800L.

I'm not sure, but I don't mind people spawning these threads just so the rest of us can enjoy the banter between the two Canadian codgers, Imagemaster and Supertelemaster

Right....that's what I also saw written on the limiter switch (could be seen on some lens pictures from while back).

Correct from left to right: Full, 2m - 6m, 6m - infinity.
