p.1 #1 · Russia- Little boy playing in the sand

Mother and her two children playing in a city park in early winter.
I toured the old Soviet Union for 6-weeks.
I saw no adults smile- except two old women.
I saw no children smile.
That was just before the USSR collapsed.
I hope the children now have reasons to smile.

Wow. I saw the pic before I read the text. No kids smiling, that is sad.

Even in China I saw people smiling.
But surprisingly, not much smiling in India.
The other 50 countries where I've traveled: seeing smiling people was an ordinary, common thing.

I like the photo.

The back story is even more interesting (to me).

You are a keen observer of many cultures and daily life.

Your observations about the lack of smiling in Soviet Russia IS an interesting observation....especially since I KNOW you get many smiles in many other countries.

Thanks Scott and Steady.
I was with a tour group and had a week alone at the end after all the others flew home. The lack of smiles was everywhere, not just when I took close-ups of people. Friends talking, children playing, etc. No smiles allowed.
It's easy to guess that 50 years of fear and suffering under a scary and all-powerful government might have that effect on people.
