Debating between these two to use mostly for travel photos. I'm not really looking to purchase for portraits so that doesn't really go into the equation for me. Mostly interested in IQ, sharpness, and bokeh. I've previously owned the 135 but found I used the 85 1.2 VI more at the time. The 135 and sigma are about same price used. Any thoughts? Thank you ahead of time guys and gals!

Agree ^, 135L is a master-peace of Canon L's primes. Small, light, sharp, quick on AF, amazingly good on bokeh, relatively cheap. Only lens don't need any focus adjustments in my bag, technically perfect as it is. I don't like hood but that is only thing I don't like about. Siggy besides new 35mm and macro lenses never did anything even close to 135L

Although I agree that the 135L is a masterpiece, the Sigma 85 is very close (I own both). The choice should not be made on IQ but on focal length. I would not think of either of them as a "travel" lens unless your primary objective was people photos. The length of the 135 obviously would be less obtrusive.

I have a 135L, and I tried a Sigma 85 1.4 for a while, which I ended up returning because I liked the 85L II better. The Sigma 85 is a nice lens, but I don't think it's in the top tier; I do think the 135L is. But of course, if you like to use 85mm and don't like to use 135mm, then that trumps any other considerations.

Like other has said, one step back 135L will give you both lenses and better IQs

It is quite possible you just prefer the 85mm focal length over 135mm. The 135L is a great lens but for general travel and I had to choose one, it would be the 85.

I currently own both and use both. I slightly favor the 135L bc of the beauty of it. Both lenses are stellar though good luck with what you choose.

The 135 is long though - in many cases, and possibly for travel, the 85 is more usuable.

That being said for pure IQ and bokeh - the 135.

You have the 85/1,2 in your profile?

That's way outdated. I haven't changed it in years but I used to own it.

For travel I'd use 85mm, regardless of brand.

...and I do own a 135L.

Get the 85mm now, you already know you like that focal length better so will get plenty of use out of it whilst you carry on saving and pick up the 135L in the future

Completely different lenses. Decide if you need 135 or 85 and buy accordingly.

Choose the focal length first. I don't understand the mentality of choosing the lens on sharpness rather than need. If that was the criteria I believe the new 300 2.8 lens even beats out the 135L for sharpness.

If I owned the 85 1.4, I may use it more than my 135. I just don't use it. I've actually considered selling it to put towards an 85 1.2...I just can't do it though. Something magical about the images.
