p.1 #1 · Dead Tree Aurora

I decided to crawl out from under a rock and post!

Sadly, I have not gotten many opportunities to go out shooting lately. Here is a lucky break while on the way home the other day. Luckily the aurora was still out when I found a suitable subject to shoot. I had to trek through 2-3ft of snow to shoot this tree. Needless to say my legs were frozen as I was just wearing light boots and jeans. My pants were literally two tubes of ice when I got the back to the car! Good thing I was only 5 min from home!!!

Thanks for looking!

Scott, these are really cool (no pun intended) the condition of the trees somehow makes these images very eerie . Your exposures are spot on to capture the night sky with such an amazing color display of the aurora. regards,
Dean

Hey Scott,

Very nice work here. I would say it would pay to keep an extra pair of snow boots and atleast some rain pants in your car...

My favorites here are #2 and 3. I like how you worked the shadow in #3.

Exceptional light. I'd say it was worth enduring the cold for these beauties. Nice work, Scott.

Thank you all very much. I think it's time to start keeping my ski pants and boots in the car. I only called it quits because my camera battery died and my spares were in my car. Lessons learned!

These are wonderful, Scott.
I've only seen the Northern Lights a few times in Fairbanks Alaska and Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, and it was always very dark when the lights were visible.
I'm a bit confused by all the ambient light you have here- presumably from a bright moon (it even casts strong shadows).
Is there a simple explanation for this city boy to grab hold of?

Thanks Charlie!

You are correct. It is from the moon. My recipe for successful aurora shots (due to garbage gear) is moonlight+snow+aurora= usable exposure. Now if I had one of those fancy new Nikon D800 with gobs of dynamic range my options would open up emmensly!

Love this set! And I have to say I'm jealous that this is the kind of scenery you encounter on the way home.

Thanks. Though, I am not sure what is to be jealous of endless boring flat prairies!
